These days the word hero is over-used. In her case, it is justified.

To those with a certain interest and knowledge in this stuff she has long been an absolute legend. I held a conversation with a MOD chap a few yrs ago and we were talking about various interests and history, etc, etc and part of the discussion was about the various exploits of SOE. I mentioned White Mouse as some of her escape stories and quotes are quite amusing and this guy basically got an historical hard on. He had apparently done his doctoral thesis on her and he was it was claim to fame that he was the first bloke that had been allowed access to the full classified files on her since they were closed after WWII. He claimed that only half about what he had been allowed to write about and had been reported about her was true because of the other half, some was still too sensitive to come out (protect certain other public profile individuals) and the rest nobody would believe. Her famous quote about the killing of a lot of Germans was the tame side of her personality!

Although "heroine" is more apropriate in her case smile

We need to get as many stories out of these people before they all pop off. A remarkable generation.

Fantastic woman and a true hero. The world's collective soul thirsts for these type people whether it knows it or not. We are poisoned by the overdose of hollow celebrity.

They are still around - but they don't have the dramatic world events happening around them which allow them to step forward.

I am sure if you go to troubled spots in the world you will come across many people who are willing to put their life in jeoprady for the sake of others.

We just don't get to hear about them as they are in obscure parts of the world or belong to cultures we don't automatically identify with.

Very true, they dont get the recognition until they've passed away - if ever.

There was a celeb culture in 1940 too. It may not have been as prevelant as now but it certainly existed.

I bet she was alive in 1981, 1985 and 1990.
