WELLINGTON: New Zealand is shivering through a one-in-50-year polar blast that has brought snow to much of the country, the weather service says.
A bitterly cold southerly blast has caused snow to fall in areas of New Zealand which do not usually receive it, making roads impassable in many areas on both islands, closing airports and cutting power to thousands.
Staff at Wellington Zoo took advantage of the first major snowfall in the capital for 40 years to give the visiting penguin ''Happy Feet'' a dip in an icy saltwater pool.

Heavy snow was falling in Wellington and was starting to settle in the city. There were also reports of snow falling in New Plymouth, Rotorua and parts of South Auckland.
The MetService head forecaster, Peter Kreft, said the polar blast was ''of the order of a 50-year'' event and warned it could last for days. The level of snow that had fallen in Wellington had not been seen since at least the 1970s, he said. (snip)

I am sure that one our our regular ministers for doublespeak will be along shortly to tell us that, far from it being cold, it is in fact one of the hottest periods for NZ since records began - they know this because their bible tells them so......and if a few graphs are tweaked a little, they'll show us the 'truth'..

July 26, 2011 — Durban, South Africa (Reuters) Rare winter snow storms wreak havoc on Durban's transport system, halting trains and stranding thousands of motorists after highways closed. An unusually heavy snowfall that blanketed large parts of South Africa snarled up transport on Tuesday (July 26), halting trains and leaving thousands of motorists stranded after highways closed.
Sizwe Ndlovu, a truck driver stranded on a Durban road said that motorists did not receive any updates after being stuck in traffic for several hours.
“This is a huge inconvenience because we don't know what's happening, we haven't received any updates as to how much longer we will be stuck here. What makes it worse is that we have no food, nothing to do, we just have to sit it out,“ said Ndlovu.
The storm also brought high winds that played havoc with shipping and delayed air transport. The military dispatched a helicopter to pluck crew members from a cargo ship that ran aground off the east coast.
Parts of South Africa usually receive a dusting of snow once or twice a year but the storm that hit large parts of the eastern half of the country on Monday and Tuesday dumped up to 60 cms (2 feet) in some areas.
Transport authorities shut sections of major highways, including a heavily travelled route between Johannesburg and the main east coast city of Durban.
The N3 highway between Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal has been closed from the Wilge toll plaza near Villiers to the Tugela toll plaza at Ladsymith.
More snow was expected to fall in many parts of the country on Wednesday.

There are a few Guardian reader libtards on Pistonheads too (normally found in the threads advocating against all logic and reason electric cars. It is only a matter of time before one pops up hereEdited by chris watton on Monday 15th August 15:49
