Signs of a cold winter ahead?
Discussion
My mom mentioned this morning that the trees and bushes are full of ripe berries at the moment (primarily holly bushes), and that this is often a sign of a severe winter ahead..... how true is this ? I've had a google and lots of people seem to use nature as a way of forecasting the weather, can't be much worse than the weathergirls can they ?
But I was just wondering if any of these natural 'signs of weather' have any truth to them?

They're plants; they respond to current and recent past weather conditions, not future ones.
Lots of old weather sayings do have a basis in fact and this one is generally taken to mean that the coming winter will be a harsh environment in comparison to the current one...............which provided all the fruit/berries.

It has been a cool and very dry summer, hence the early berries and the leaves starting to turn on some trees already. I wouldn't be surprised if we had the first proper frost before September is out. I'm sure the met office would disagree, but it feels like we are still in the same weather pattern that gave us the horrendous weather around Christmas.

which is why we're freezing our arse off in august. I can't believe how cold these last few days have been.
Our local BBC weather forecaster looked at the figures tonight and told us that it has been the coldest summer since 1993.Now, during the early 2000s when we were having warmer than usual summers, we were all being told that this was clear conclusive proof of global warming.
I'm just waiting to hear how this summer (and the last one and the one before that) that has been colder than average is also clear conclusive proof of global warming .....

Where has this very dry summer been?
Even in the south of England its rained on almost every day at some point throughout August and quite a lot of July as well.
Here in sunny Yorkshire, we had hardly any rain from April until August, and even then the only rain has been in the last 2 weeks or so.Even in the south of England its rained on almost every day at some point throughout August and quite a lot of July as well.
