Discussion
Story goes like this;
- 17 year old girl and 21 year old boyfriend go to Mathew Street Festival on the Sunday;
- Drink lots;
- Decide to go for a swim when they get back over to the Wirral;
- Girl ends up washed up on beach 7am.

- It takes some time to name her;
- Following which it comes to light that her boyfriend didn't make it home;
- His shoes and mobile phone are found next to her body.
Various other news stories emerge over the coming hours and days, his FB is filled with people begging him to come home and telling him he's not in trouble, FB makes some groups appealing for info, everyone tweets his picture so we all know what he looks like.

He's been missing since Sunday night.
A sad story, but I can't imagine there's any other possibility that he is, unfortunately, going to wash up somewhere soon.
I don't know either of them personally, they are both friends of friends who are understandably upset. I feel that social media has a lot to answer for, people jumping on the bandwagon and perhaps giving false hope.

Given the tides and currents off New Brighton, if he did drown, his remains will turn up eventually.Hate to say it, but you'd have to be spectacularly drunk / stupid to swim in the sea off NB without a wet suit and a life jacket. . . . . and I say that as somebody who had a few post night out dips into the marine lake in WK when living on South Parade (even in the middle of the summer it was bloody cold!)

Aye you won't last very long thats for sure.... I do surf competitions for sport and even though I am used to swimming in the sea, Its horrible when there big swell or its choppy. Even with goggles its quite a task to see where exactly you are headed... I can only imagine what its like in the pitch black, drunk, no goggles, no wet suit.... yeah I'd be scared sHate to say it, but you'd have to be spectacularly drunk / stupid to swim in the sea off NB without a wet suit and a life jacket. . . . . and I say that as somebody who had a few post night out dips into the marine lake in WK when living on South Parade (even in the middle of the summer it was bloody cold!)

Yup... Pretty chilly. Remember New Brighton Baths? Now THAT was cold! I used to live up near the bowling greens pretty much opposite the marine lake, (where I used to kayak with the Venture scoutsHate to say it, but you'd have to be spectacularly drunk / stupid to swim in the sea off NB without a wet suit and a life jacket. . . . . and I say that as somebody who had a few post night out dips into the marine lake in WK when living on South Parade (even in the middle of the summer it was bloody cold!)

Miss the Wirral, really. Used to bike down the Prom to West Kirby every weekend to see my nan, and carry on along the Wirral way to Thurstaston. Lovely.

I grew up just down the road from the old Hoylake baths and remember the freezing water well . . . . . even in the height of summer, I must have been about 10-11 when they closed it, always thought it would have been a superb venue if they could have modernised and covered it, but hey ho at least nobody will ever accuse the Wirral council of acting in the best interests of the locals!Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
