Sounds like the parents are a bit "simple" - there have been other cases of kids being taken in similar circumstances. Not many make it into the public domain as family court hearings are incredibly secret.

Beggars belief compared to well publicised cases of children who die at their parents hands despite extensive social services involvement.

Good, obesity is a massive problem in the UK and it needs to be tackled strongly at this generational level as their are much fewer excuses now than when most people on here were children.

Strongly? Are you advocating putting them in a ploughed field and having social workers on horseback chase them around and around in the rain, bullwhipping the howling chubbies with until they're thin?

You do realise that its the parents that kill the kids and not the social workers don't you? Those parents have rights, and are very good at covering up. Unfortunately its mostly underfunding, and lack of power thats to blame when things go wrong......but that would mean MP's having to take responsibility.

These kids are in danger because there parents are feeding them crap, if one of them dies then it would be the social workers fault for not dealing with it. This family have had years to sort it out.

Sounds a damn good plan & it'll give all those unemployed hounds something to chase too.

Perhaps we could start a new sport. Fat kid pursuit, like pursuit cycling, start them off at opposite ends of a track and the one who catches up gets benefits that week

Don't be silly. Make it a piece of cake. Something they will actually strive to win...

Yeah, much better to have mentally scared thin children. rolleyes

I guess it's typical Mail nonsense. I can't believe that any normal person would consider dividing up a family is ever healthy.

All that these youngsters need is some time in a posh gym, of course we the tax payer would have to fork out on the fees.

I too see think there is no middle ground between having obese children and mentally traumatising them into being thin. rolleyes

A bit OTT in my opinion. Doesn't Dundee council have better things to do. Like tackling the homeless, unemployed, OAP's who can't affort to heat their hourses for starters.

Its a testament to the indoctrination of 13 years of New Labour that there is even a debate about whether this is right or wrong.

It is a scandalous intrusion of the state into the lives of individuals. As Ronald Reagan said, the State has a duty to protect people from each other; it has no right to try and protect people from themselves

This.

Unbelievable that people think this is the states job. Knowing local government the kids would come back the same size but now addicted to crack.

The last thing I wish is to appear offensive, but your post demonstrates a deeply misguided view of the role of Government in a well ordered society.

If these kids die, it won't be anyone's "fault"; it will be natural selection.

In a civilised and prosperous society then, yes, the Government should aim to educate citizens on how to live healthy lives, if only to reduce the burden on the mechanisms of the state. It is however ABSOLUTELY for the individual citizen to decide what to do then. So long as no law is broken, the state has no business concerning itself further.

I agree totally.

However, at a certain point, the obesity of the few, inflicts itself on the many. Ever sat next to a properly obese person on public transport? Ever wondered who in the fk manages to bust all the toilet seats in public conveniences? It can't all be vandalism surely? Have you not heard the cost and difficulties the NHS incur for basic patient handling of these individuals? I could go on.

Nonetheless, as others point out, there is a middle ground which is less extreme than the tactics propsed in the DM article.

Just trying to get my head around this, in our democratic land that is United Kingdom, on one hand your kids are fat so we the state are removing them from their home and parents, nice! On the other hand you would like to bring an end to your life, you are terminally ill and in distress, sorry we cannot allow you to euthanasia,we the state think that would be wrong.

Something wrong here IMHO.
