So John Galliano got off lightly for making anti-Semitic insults in a bar.
They should have locked him up for being a pretentious knob though. But I suppose it's part of the job description.

Agree we should of locked him up for being a nob. However, Ive never understood why/how there are specific laws against bad mouthing Jews. And such a shocking reaction if people mention them in any derogitary manner. Even enough to make the front page of the world news!!! I appreciate history hasnt exactly been a party for them, however why the 'individual' laws etc??? Why not just label it 'racist' not anti-semetic, is there more meaning to this???

Not looking to have myself arrested here!!! just interested to understand why all the hype, If I walk into a bar and have a falling out with a 'large' person and in the argument call him a 'cat funt' it shouldnt make the news headlines - whats the difference?

It is all too close to thought police for my liking.

Up to a point but the laws came in for obvious reasons.

But in today's World are those reasons still there or are these once very important and land mark laws now actually counter productive and actually having a negative effect given that the damage they were intended to prevent/deal with is now covered far better in other legislation?

I expect the politics of repealing such laws in France and other countries of mainland Europe are a mine filed most politicians would want to steer clear of.
The French court in this instance made the right decision in showing Galliano leniency with a suspended fine.

I think the whole 'hate crime' thing is extremely worrying.

This whole thing was a big waste of time.

If he was just any other biggoted drunk, someone would have told him to 'STFU' an maybe given him a slap.

But because he was 'famous' someone thought it would be just better to film him being an obnoxious drunk and then seeing if they could make a few euros selling the tape.

Odious, horrible man, but really, he shoudlnt have been hung, drawn and quartered as he was for such an idiotic episode. No one died.

The laws are in place because of history. Without any context they appear a little bit odd to say the least, but when you remember that 6 million jews were murdered in Europe about 70 years ago it starts to make a little bit more sense.

A drunken idiot was extremely rude in a cafe. His comments were distasteful. It was not pleasant - usual for drunken outbursts.

But he didn't kill anyone. He didn't physically attack anyone. He didn't try to convince others into physical or verbal aggression against anyone.

Charge him for being drunk and disorderly then, but a hate crime? Going down a slippery slope here.

Genuine question - I'd heard on the telly he was done for something to do with Racism.

Surely it's religious hatred, or something.

Are 'Jews' a race?

Unfortunately, the laws are there because Europe went down an even worse slippery slope 70 years ago.

He was a bit of a cock and the punishment is more or less in line with the level of cockness displayed. He's a millionaire and probably thinks he can say what he likes - like a lot of arrogant pricks.

Oh I'm sorry, I must have missed the bit where he set up a concentration camp and started gassing jews.......

FFS, he's a t**t, so what? I really can't abide the idea that people cannot hold certain views. You don't have to agree with him by any means, but he should still be permitted to hold whatever odious beliefs he wishes. Thought policing is a disgraceful thing IMHO, and ironically, when I consider thought policing of this nature and what it represents, my thoughts turn to "first, they came for the jews...."...

Will people be so happy when saying that speeding is fun/acceptable, or, not so far fetched by any means, saying AGW is a lie, will be pilloried and prosecuted......

He got a suspended fine and sacked from his job for being a .

Dunno why you guys are aerated by this? A person in his position would have been sacked by his employers had he made offensive comments about most things.

He was arrogant and thought that he was untouchable. He now knows differently.

This is a non story. He is of no consequence. He designs dresses. Big deal.

Exactlty, so my question was - why is there such a massive thing made about it? Racism goes on day in day out all around the world and always will... IMHO your free to think what you want.

Is it all because of the Nazis we still have specific laws against bad mouthing Jews? Seems a bit wierd now as surely there must of been many persecuted religions throughout time.....

Shirely he should of just got sent home for being a t*at and that is that. Hes only shouted at somebody. Im interested why a court case and actual prosecution.

It's when he starts drunkenly insulting people in public it becomes an issue.

Enjoying a holiday in Austria when we were joined for dinner by another English couple, what could possibly go wrong! Our enjoyment of the evening was soon halted by our visiting 'friend' when he started bad mouthing the German guests in the restaurant , in a very loud voice. Some tosh about @**)%$#@^&&* nazi scum blah blah blah.
Of course the place was full of German families enjoying their holiday, I mean this 'friend' of ours wasn't even drunk or drugged!! Needless to say we made our excuses and left making apologies to fellow diners on our way out. Fortunately the waiter sympathised and we were offered another table, our 'friend' was politely asked to leave. Its not only the celeb's that make pratts of themselves.
