A British man has been killed and his wife kidnapped from a Kenyan resort, Kenyan police say.
The married couple were staying at the luxury Kiwayu Safari Village, north of Lamu Island, when armed men attacked.
Terrifying. The married couple were staying at the luxury Kiwayu Safari Village, north of Lamu Island, when armed men attacked.
It's an hour's speedboat ride from Somalia - so clearly a risk. I'd be looking into the hotel's security, however, I suspect someone was either kipping or paid off - when we stayed much further south near Mombasa, there were always armed guards patrolling discreetly at the entrances to the hotel.

Hotel security isn't worth a thing. If you're some Kenyan paid less in a month than the tourists you're guarding will drop on a lunchtime snack you're hardly going to risk your life for them. Olf said:
Sounds like there's something a bit deeper here than chance nastiness.
There's definitely something going on, the fact they were the only guests, they arrived on the Saturday and the f
kers just happened to turn up on the Sunday morning. One of the hotel workers was definitely involved.Bluebarge said:

Considering the Chandlers were kidnapped while the Royal Navy looked on I don't think you can expect much from a hotel's security.Gun said:

One of the hotel workers was definitely involved. It was quite depressing to hear a local authority figure (police?) on the BBC news this morning stating that the husband was shot because he resisted, the unsaid implication being that he was partially to blame for getting himself killed.
I would rather it be presented that he was brave for putting up a fight and not willingly submitting himself and his wife to god knows what, rather than being complicit in his own murder, but I guess that, as we keep seeing, life in Africa is very cheap.
