Those figures can't be right, does she really get paid based on how much energy she can generate regardless of how much she uses?

How much is a windmill and can I stick one in my back garden?

Not sure, but I know of a few dozen bandwagons who can fix you up with solar panels!

EDLT, anyone producing electricity categorised as renewable on a small scale (less than 5MW) may be paid for the generation of that electricity, regardless of the amount they actually use. This is under the FIT scheme (Feed-in-Tariff). It is irrelevant whether you are the monarch or Joe Bloggs, with a rooftop solar PV array on your house or Farmer Brown with a field full of the things.

They can also sell any unused electricity back to the grid at a set fee per unit, whilst saving money on the electricity now not purchased.

This is following practice in mainland Europe for years. Motive for the FIT’s introduction in the UK can be found here - www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/meeting_energy/rene... levels of tariff per generation method here - www.fitariffs.co.uk/eligible/levels/

James Delingpole - author of the original piece in the Telegraph - ("is right about everything" – his words, so he can spin a story in whichever direction he wants), has managed to make this all about the Queen stiffing the tax payer which isn’t really what this story is about.

The story is actually (not)saying FIT incentives are available for (anyone, not just the Queen) those who want to earn them by investing in the kit which gets you them – and are part of the government’s (and many other country’s governments) policy to grow renewable energy capability via non-traditional energy operators ie not the large electricity companies, however he has chosen this topic to make political comment/criticism of the (Queen) practice.

Not how I read the article at all - and I doubt whether it was his intention. Anyone familiar with his writing should expect that he is using a particular brush (the Queen) to tar a policy in typical ironic, OTT, fashion.

But, if you agree with govt. policy on FIT and renewables well...
