Proposal now to create a law allowing women (and men) to approach the Police to ask if their prospective partner has convictions for domestic violence
On the face of it, sounds like a good idea to me, can't see you'd have a problem unless you had something to hide?
Example given (the "Claire") was killed by her partner who had previous for stalking and attacking an ex, despite the fact she had moved many miles away, changed name and appearance

Sounds perfectly acceptable to me, some people have a dark violent past and a woman has the right to know.
Nobody has a "right" to know about somebody else's past . . . how bizarre to suggest that. What else should other people have a "right" to know . . . if you're irresponsible with money, ever taken drugs, ever ogled your ex wife's sister . . . the list goes on . . . where dos the line get drawn ? Will it become a legal requirement to register driving convictions with a "woman's safety register" so she can asses a man's driving history before getting in his car ?
This is a seriously bad idea, on a par with publishing the addresses of all the local paedophiles so the local soft lads can go and make themselves look tough. Ill conceived rubbish from the hard of thinking.

Agree... It won't be liked, but there you go.What else should other people have a "right" to know . . . if you're irresponsible with money, ever taken drugs, ever ogled your ex wife's sister . . . the list goes on . . . where dos the line get drawn ? I'm sure you'd feel different if a woman you knew was assaulted by a guy that turned out to have previous for such things
I can't see that someone that's capable of violent crime against a woman is likely to change that much, past or not
We are talking about SERIOUS violent crime here, not "he was a bit horrid to me"
Also, details wont be released, just "clear" or "history" (appreciate though this could be seen as a bad thing)
And yes, as in the OP, men would be able to check for bunnny boilers as well

agreed, laws like this would basically assume that people don't make mistakes and they don't reform. What else should other people have a "right" to know . . . if you're irresponsible with money, ever taken drugs, ever ogled your ex wife's sister . . . the list goes on . . . where dos the line get drawn ? Your wrong, as an employer I have the right To do a criminal background check on prospective employees. Money issues and ogling your ex wife's sister don't net you a criminal record as far as I'm aware. What else should other people have a "right" to know . . . if you're irresponsible with money, ever taken drugs, ever ogled your ex wife's sister . . . the list goes on . . . where dos the line get drawn ?

They can as it could be money laundering or voyeurism (and yes people have been convicted of that even though its an old law fairly recently)The point with a CRB is that you can ONLY do it if the job puts people into contact with the vulnerable and you can only do it if the person consents

How does the law define prospective partner? "Slipped into a bit but not yet hanging out of"
