to be honest, the thing which most surprised me was:

"UK ministers are not allowed to cut fuel duty without getting permission from Brussels first."

blimey.

It's actually a very welcome change from the normal transport policy of " why can't they take the tube like normal folk"

So well done to the lib dems

Having paid the outragrous prices for fuel that are charged in the Hebrides I can see why something needed doing. The lack of competition and extra transport costs, coupled with the Islanders requirement for more fuel as they travel further through absolute necessity made for some ludicrous fuel prices.

There are other rural areas in the UK that should probably benefit too.

One thing it won't do is create hordes of "fuel tourists" heading to these places for cheap fuel. It will STILL be pricier than it is "in town"...

Must say it was news to me, too. I can see import duty possibly stepping into the EC's territory, but not fuel duty.

It isn't just Scotland before the usual anti-Scots bashing really takes effect. Unless the Scilly Isles have been moved.

indeed

it costs about 10p/l more than in London anyway, and yet people have far smaller incomes.

seem entirely fair to reduce the duty for people like this.

Its been a while since I read it, but I believe its to do with taxing the same thing differently in different parts of the country.

Seems like a good idea, shame it had to get approved by Brussels.

What a farce!

Nope, can't see any outrage. Seems entirely fair to me.

If you live in the Hebrides you can expect to pay more for fuel. Why should the rest of us subsidise people you choose to live in the back of beyond.

If fuel prices are too high there they are probably too high in the rest of the uk too.

The tax should be lowered all round.

"[The tax system] could raise as much revenue and achieve as much redistribution as it currently does in far less costly ways," said Nobel Prize-winning economist Sir James Mirrlees, who led the review.

What an incredibly crass posting! Why should someone who lives in a remote area "expect to pay more for fuel"?

A lot of people don't "choose to live in the back of beyond". They may have to live there - when in 1981 I was sent to Shetland with my job I didn't have the choice!

Today the lowest price in my area (Stirling) is 132.9p/litre for unleaded. In Lerwick it is 150.9p/litre.

How does the cost of housing compare to London?

Well I think we should ALL get cheaper fuel.

In some respects I can understand however that it may cost more to take the fuel there thus the extra money is in distribution costs.

That just makes my piss boil - whilst we all hate the level of duty on fuel, it is "pay-as-you-go" for everyone. The more you use, the more you pay including every foreign driver if they fill up here. (Which they don't silly )
