Presumably the rules were brought in to adddress public complaints about multiple chuggers (not that anyone would ever consider the RBL to be chuggers of course) in the City Centre. If they give RBL special dispensation other charities will no doubt ask for dispensaton too and the whole system breaks down. Not helped by the fact that it is mainly the local RBL branch's fault for not organising an application sooner - more so than the Council and Shelter in fairness. Note no formal appeal or complaint from RBL so far.

Best outcome for all concerned would appear to be Shelter graciously giving up their place for RBL in return for another licence as soon as possible. But I doubt that's what the media and opposition politicians want.

Hmm...

I agree with the limiting of the number of chuggers but I would have said that any legislation or by law dealing with things like this should have an specific exemption for RBL for 1st November until 17th November.

Not fair on other Charities? Tough, enjoy going and fking yourselves.

One of the few charities I tend to go out of my way to help.

They are not banned from Bitprmingham at all. There is a limit on the number of charity tin rattlers per street, and the British legion were too late for the application. They can go elsewhere, on other streets, (at least that's how I read it).

Very much noted, but if they are banned for Broad Street and New Street then they might as well be banned from the centre, although i will admit it is nearly 10 years now since I went there almost daily and they have done a bit of work i hear smile

The RBL should just turn up.

Don't think anyone will dare move them on, the papers would have a field day.

ETA Shelter, you idiots.

I`m a Poppy Appeal organizer, every year you hear of something like this and in the end there is a U turn, its good publicity for the appeal.I have been involved with the annual Poppy Appeal for about 25yrs and never had a problem. Its an unwritten rule that no other charity interferes or clashes with the two weeks of the Poppy Appeal.Look out for our collectors and give generously.

It's not really shelters fault, is it? They simply went through the same process that RBL did. The fault lies with the council.

If the unwritten rule (as mentioned above) exists, why would shelter apply for that date?

It's like banning Father Christmas on December 25th.

Because they failed to read the unwritten rule.

Is it just that date they apply for, or is it a block? Can't tell from the article.
