I guess Im a big ol softy underneath the harsh exterior, but I was sat watching an episode of Whale Wars on one of the cable channels last night, and was quite horrified at what I saw.

Ive seen a few of these Whale Wars programs over the years where they just chase round the fleets and try to prevent them from being able to hunt or process the whales they are hunting. I happened to switch on last night just in time to see 4 minky whales barbarically slaughtered by a japanese whaling fleet - all under the supposed guise of 'Research'...

I was absolutely fuming by the end of the program, the crew of the 'Steve Irwin' all looked completely gutted, and all for what!? So the japanese can continue their curious blood thirsty slaughtering of endangered or protected species at the expense of yet another of the worlds finite 'resources' - and despite TV coverage still will maintain its for research - its not going to be fking research for long if they've all appeared alongside a bowl of fking soy sauce is it!

Why does the world stand for this? Why are they still allowed to go out and fire a harpoon the size of a goal post through another mammals body, then drag it alongside their smaller ship until they can haul it up on to the factory ship for it to be 'processed'... Theres no longer any doubt over the fact that it is nothing to do with research, it is pure unadulterated 'butchery' for it's (money) meat!

I think its Norway (or somewhere round there) that has a yearly 'festival' where they wade out into a bay where hundreds of whales have been trapped and basically bludgeon their brains out for fun... Oh 'its a tradition'... How the fk is that acceptable in this day and age! Dont they know that the world's fked up enough as it is without trying to kill of another species 'cos its fun yaaa'... furious

Anyone else care to air their views?

Faroe Islands. Dnaish IIRC.

It is pretty barbaric, especially given our contemporary knowledge of the intelligence and comminication skills of the species.

How endangered are they? I've never seen numbers, it's a bit difficult to count undersea creatures surely?

If they weren't endangered would it be acceptable?

There are quotas, and the whales they catch are not the endangered ones, as far as I am aware.

I can't see how whaling is any different from any other type of fishing except for the scale and people's sentimentalism towards the whale. It all involves hunting a wild animal and then a less than instantaneous death. Depending on who you ask there are between 350,000 and 700,000 Minke whales, so they're not exactly down to the last couple are they? At least they probably do get eaten unlike the millions of fish caught by EU fishing boats which are left to die and then tipped back into the sea because of quotas.

You know Japan aren't the only whalers? What are your reasons for not whaling? All too jammed with emotion this subject.

OP. If you're worried about Whaling, you realy don't want to find out how Dolphins are captured for shipment to captivity (or more correctly, you really, really don't want to find out what happens to the Dolphins that aren't deemed suitable....)

I wouldn't mind if it was possible to humanely kill a whale, reliably, but AFAIK it isn't.

http://www.ifaw.org/Publications/Program_Publicati...

20% killed instantly, the other 80% took 10 mins to die on average.

The French govt (yeah, OK) have studied fois gras production and concluded that force feeding doesn't cause distress. From what I remember of the study, the geese/ducks were reported to run towards the feeder, rather than away.

Shark finning is just stupid.

They are not allowed they just do it!

A recent press report suggested that it is as much as a defiance to being told to stop than an actual want to continue.

It's not done like that in France as far as I know. The birds will naturally overeat in preparation for their migration, the farmer just makes plenty of food available. I think it is still done that way in Eastern Europe, but that's not exported.

This. Why doesn't the Steve Irwin go sailing off to Brussels?
