Surprised there isn't a thread on this already, it's all over the BBC news

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-1500...

I've no comment to make about the events on Bloody Sunday, just that here we have another lawyer-driven compensation scenario, which is something I disapprove of.

So if the Army shot some of your family, you wouldn't expect any compensation? Whatever you say now, I bet you'd change your tune if it came to the crunch.

i look forward to the compensation offer to the 600 civilians killed by the IRA.

They could have paid the 13 families £10m+ each for the amount they spent on the enquiry.

Why do feel entitled to bet on what I might do in a hypothetical circumstance? I might just as easily bet that you like to put on women's clothing and hang around in bars.

But if you feel able to explain how my being given some money for having my brother shot 39 years ago would be appropriate, then I'm all ears. And this isn't 'free money' BTW, it's money that has been paid in by you and me, and some of it will be going to lawyers.

Are you saying that they shouldn't have been protesting that day?

As far as I was aware, protest was and still is allowed in the UK.

I'm sure Adams, McGuinness & Co will be whipping out their chequebooks shortly. Or maybe not.

Sounds like you've been watching too much Monty Python. If the State treated you wrongly, whether false arrest, unlawful imprisonment, or getting shot, you would expect compensation. And no, money cannot replace a loved one, but it can make up for lost earnings, and pay for things that may alleviate the emotional distress - how people then spend it is up to them. It's been a part of our law since Norman times that if you commit a wrongful act you are liable to pay compensation, so your little rant is 945 years too late.

I don't know anything about bloody Sunday, but tbh if clearly rioting/smashing up stuff for the hell of it I don't think you should be surprised to be stopped using whatever force it takes.

Plenty of people would have certainly welcomed at least rubber bullets this summer.

Maybe you should read up on what happened then. It well documented now (probbaly too well documented to be honest). I am pretty tired of the whole thing now. How many more years are we going to have to put up wioth enquiries, hearings etc etc.

If anyone had a relative amongst the Tolpuddle Martys, maybe they should be putting in a claim now.

It has opened what will become a very expensive flood gate.

Plus, as has been said, will Sinn Fein be paying compensation to all those killed by them during the troubles? I doubt it.

I hope I'm a decendant of Wat Tyler. If I was, I would like to be recompensed for loss of earnings in the family since 1381 - adjusted for inflation, of course.

I'm a descendant of Adam, and wished to be compensated for my family having been unfairly evicted from an apparently very nice garden which I would no doubt have inherited by now.
