A friend of mine had this as his status...

Simple Drugs Test
(This was written by British Soldier - What he says makes a lot of sense!)
I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to earn that pay, I train for war and eventualy deploy. I am required to pass a random urine test… for drugs, with which I have no problem. ... What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.
Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a benefits cheque because I have to pass one to EARN IT for them? Please understand that I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone sit on their arse drinking beer and smoking dope. Could you imagine how much money the government would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a benefit cheque? Please pass this along if you agree or simply delete it if you don't.

...if only.

I think that makes absolutely perfect sense, never thought of it before but what a perfect suggestion. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with this.

worth setting up a petition on the downing street website?

let us know if you do, i'll sign it

well it's still worth it imho and if it gains any traction then let the papers know that it has got a lot of signatures etc and get it in the papers and then hopefully something may come of it

And of course, drug testing 2.5million people monthly will be nice and cheap.... No it won't be.

why don't they drug test the higher risk people such as people under 60 and people on long term benefits or whatever to reduce that number. it won't be cheap but i bet it could be done reasonably cheaply with economies of scale etc

if it's not cheap then why do the army and employers do it?

Those on JSA are required to sign every 2 weeks, this appointment usually takes between 10 and 30 minutes. Claimants could be given a sample bottle the first time they go and asked to return it next time, these samples could be tested by a lab everyday and a result would be known within 2 working days. If a claimant fails their benefits could be stopped before they were paid out.

Boris johnson suggests somethng similar for sentencing people who commit alcohol fuelled violent crime.

Twice daily breath tests - if you fail you go to prison.

Tries in one US state has reduced prison population by 14% .

Drugs test everyone.
Lets find out how many of our doctors, teachers, company bosses, Lorry drivers, footballers, MP's Etc. etc. enjoy a quiet line or a joint every now and again.

What is the point of that? Apart from the illegal aspect of taking certain drugs.

I can understand testing all on the public purse..

I don't think there would be a lab in the UK (or anywhere) that could handle 2.5mil piss tests twice a month. Even if there was, the cost would be astronomical. You'd also need a nurse or two at every job centre to take samples as well.

Would be nice if it would work, but it wouldn't.

A valid point, but what if it was a programme of random testing? You would have a deterrent and I am sure a high quantity would be caught.

Random testing with a penalty of a life time benefit ban if positive would be the way to go maybe?

And the claimant must pay for the test.

Problem solved.

Fail test or not turn up - no benefits for a month

Do it three times - no benefits.

My point was simply:
Many, many people take drugs. Taking drugs is by no means an indicator of peoples ability to perform in society, nor is it an indicator of their value to society.
Soldiers take drug tests because they have access to weaponry.
I can be drug tested because I AM on the public purse, and I perform a safety critical role.

I find it interesting that for some reason people think that taking drugs should prohibit you from any form of assistance from the state. As they smoke a fag and have a nice glass of wine.
