The EU courts have ruled that current Premier League broadcasting rights are against its rules.

woohoo

The ruling will allow pubs to show football matches via foreign television decoders only if rights holders allow.

redcard

I somehow can't see the Football Clubs being very keen on this. It would mean that their overpaid starlets living in the real world.

I can't wait but you know it would just mean the PL upping the price to purchase the rights at the next round of bidding next year.

I like to feel part of something. Funny though after this seasons games so far 2 of the observations we have made is that lots of people don't have a clue how to clean themselves or their clothes, and lots of people appear to be getting dumb.

Which most don't. I've noticed a couple of pubs where at the start or the match a message scrolls along the screen stating 'Not for viewing out side of Algeria".

The issue is who is going to police/enforce it? It's not the Rights Holder's problem if a Greek or Aglerian TV viewing card makes its way to the UK.

Are Sky reps really going to walk into a footy pub in the middle of Manchester and say 'Excuse me Landlord but you can't show that in here... Would you please turn it off and have our Sky subscription costing you £1K a month?'

That's exactly what Sky DID.
They took the publican to court. And lost.

However, it absolutely IS the rights holder's problem because Sky isn't going to pay them very much if they have to price match with Algeria in order to maintain their subscribers.

The Hartlepool United ones, we haven't got to a level where seats are compulsory so standing is still allowed.

ok...

I might have got this wrong, was she showing a Sky transmission or some thing like the old DigiAlb/Tring transmission.

I thought the European TV providers bought rights to show matches directly from the footy people, not from Sky.

I'm assuming then, she was showing a Sky Italia transmission or similar.

Plenty of pubs are now buying German/Greek/Scandinavian TV cards and getting them shipped over to show footy that isn't available on Sky. These are in contravention of the issuers terms and conditions, but who is gonig to do anything.

If she was using a European Sky sub to show sports channels then it won't be long before the card serial number is scrolling across the screen and a quick call by a Sky Rep will have the card off in a matter of seconds.

A Commercial Sky subscription is prohibitively expensive for most pubs to be able to afford it, hence people trying to get viewing cards from other EU countries, or in many cases using a domestic subscription in a commercial environment which is another big nono if you get caught.

What I am struggling to understand is, if someone is will to sell me a card and I'm willing to buy what is the problem.
Why is it different to say importing a jumper.

the issue is showing the Saturday 3pm kick off games - which aren't broadcast on Sky UK

If you can find someone to buy a Sky Italia subscription in Italy for you and send you the box and card, your local Landlord would be a fool not to buy it off you for £3000.

He can bin Sky UK and he'll likely save himself over £10K a year, and you'd pocket £2K out of the deal....

PM me a list of your mates who live in Italy, who don't already have a Sky Italia subscription and I'll sort out the rest. (New dish & installation etc)

We'll split the profit 50/50.

Now can you begin to see why Murdoch is getting a bit jumpy?

Firstly - the issue is with the PREMIER LEAGUE - not SKY.

The PL sell their coverage to different broadcasters by country and in the UK it is SKY. What this ruling says is that the you cannot force a UK person to watch from the UK provider as it is against EU principles.

Whilst I have no love for PL and SKY I think its a bit unfair they cannot decide how to sell their own product.

What this might mean is that one broadcaster now buys for all of SKY.

Edit - and according to the Guardian - this ruling applies differently for domestic and business users. A business would be morel imtied as it is a public viewing and subject to further copyright restrictions.
