Seems like a excellent idea to me it means at 14 the scum can ps off out of school with no qualifications instead of spending thousands trying to keep them at school until they are 16 when they leave with no qualifications.

Also teachers can teach instead of being social workers/riot control officers

I think it's a good idea, although I can see a lot of staff losing their jobs in underclass areas if the idea is adopted laugh

Isn't this how it used to be?

My dad left school at 15, went into a trade then the forces and did OK for himself.

This current idea of making kids staying on until 18 is indeed ludicrous, it would be wonderful to go back to the old system of apprenticeship/forces/ further education depending on what the child wants to do and its abilities. However I suppose it is seen as 'elitist' by the liberals and we can't have that now can we...

However most of our manufacturing is now gone and our armed forces are a shadow of what they once were. I suppose it is all part of the greater 'rotting Britain' picture.

Tried getting a decent tradesman these days?

We are hugely short of skilled manual workers

We have a huge over supply of degree level folk who refuse to get their hands dirty

Precisely. A lot of organisations at the moment can't afford to pay people to work for them, let alone pay for trainees as well, who unfortunately aren't very productive for a company and consume some productive capacity of the existing staff.

So how is forcing a kid to stay in school from 14 to 18 improving this?

I guess the costs saved in 'educating' them could be given to the new employer to cover training?

And how are you going to monitor this training? Employers will simply pocket if the training isn't supervised.

I was thinking that the money would go towards paying the wage where they work, with training coming in the form of experience on the job.

If they leave at 14, they will learn. They'll learn which is the best illness to have in order to get the best sickness benefit.

I left school at 14 back in 1991 and straight into a full time job, (as in 60+ hr's per week).
How the Fenella Fudge did you manage that?

You think that in an extra 4 years they will suddenly turn over a new leaf and not follow in the footsteps of their parent towards the gravy train.

I remeber the year when all the scum left school it went from a hell hole full of scum to a reasonably pleasant place.

dump the scum on the scrap pile at 14 delaying it until they are 18 achieves nothing other then hindering the education of others

I think that, providing they go into training or work and do not become NEETs, this is not a bad idea, particularly if it is linked to measures to facilitate learning later in life for those who choose badly.

I also think that branding anyone who is not cut out for a life requiring academic achievement as "scum" is part of the problem.

That's fair enough, I don't really care about them, though I'd rather that they were incarcerated in school than hanging around the streets; idle hands, devil, etc. The important thing is that there are and always have been kids who would be happier and more useful making an honest living and perhaps learning a trade at fourteen than studying, and it is important not to brand them as "scum".
