Quick question:

The FTSE 100 was well above 6000 not long ago. Now it goes down to 5000 and everyone is bleating on how bad the economey is. Why wasen't everyone jumping with joy when it was over 6000 what will it need to be before people are happy?

Does the FTSE 100 give a good indication of how well the british econmomey is doing?

In the current unstable financial climate my feeling is that the Footsie is simply indicating a typical bulls and bears scenario. Slightest wiff of good or bad news and they all pile in, most likely bears will be order of the next 12 months broadly. Of course I may be entirely wrong.

Have a look at the make up of the FTSE 100. Hardly any of the firms make their profits from the UK exclusively, in fact most do not. So not a good indicator of UK plc performance at all really.

However, as a proxy for world markets its actually very good with the most diverse underlying profit/earnings line of any of the world indicies.

Checkout the graph on this link. Unfortunately stock markets are pretty much where they were 10 years ago. So some might argue it's a good time to buy!
