Michael Anthony Thorpe, 33, of Outwood Road, Heald Green, Stockport, was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary.
He is accused of entering Mr Cooke's house armed with a knife, and is expected to stand trial at Manchester Crown Court on 2 December.
You live by the err knife...He is accused of entering Mr Cooke's house armed with a knife, and is expected to stand trial at Manchester Crown Court on 2 December.
I have no sympathy. Hopefully if it becomes the normal state of affairs they'll start thinking twice.
Excellent news, however, I am quite confused by the report:
'Raymond Jacobs, 39, died from knife wounds he suffered at the house.
Mr Thorpe was remanded into custody to appear for trial at Manchester Crown Court on 2 December.
Mr Cooke was arrested on suspicion of murder and bailed until 17 October pending further inquiries.'
So there were 2 burglars? Thorpe & Jacobs? The former was caught and the latter died?
The report doesn't explain what Thorpe's role was in all of this, apart from saying he was arrested.

Thorpe was charged with aggravated burglary, so I assume he was Jacobs' accomplice'Raymond Jacobs, 39, died from knife wounds he suffered at the house.

It must have been utterly terrifying, the scum had taken him upstairs at knife point before he retaliated. Imagine having the courage to take the decision to fight back, he should get a medal for it. I was appalled when I heard he had been arrested.. while I know justice has to run its course it must have been a terrible wait and he will still live with the consequences despite being exonerated.BalhamBadger said:

maybe scenario went like this -taken upstairs , wife and daughter come back in.
scum burglar says he will stab them
man makes a stand against low life scum who have no moral code. and leech off society.
lowlife scum has righteous vindication sent from god through tool of this man.
lowlife scum dead, honest hardworking, asset to community family are safe.

Sounds very plausible, unfortunately it looks from the BBC article they've had to move away from the area. Presumably for fear of reprisals from the deceased's family.taken upstairs , wife and daughter come back in.

Could have ended very badly indeed for him, glad he pulled it off.
Couple of points:
1) Domestic burglaries are well down. There is a mandatory 3 year sentence for domestic burglary and this HAS moved "career" burglars on to non-residential burglaries.
2) In my experience of burglaries, armed burglaries are NOT common, in fact they're vanishingly rare. In general are NOT comitted to steal. They are comitted to settle debts or disputes, overwhelmingly to do with drugs.
Unless you live in manchester apparently. Seems like this happens all the time up there...
Domestic burglary really is the last resort of the desparate. What do you net? A telly, a laptop, a car if you're lucky. The risks? Long jail sentence, and a half decent chance of getting caught especially if you do it regularly. And of course, the possibility of getting a good kicking off of a disturbed home owner.
So, in my experience, the "law abiding homeowner" has little to fear from burglars, and even less to fear of the burglar being armed. If they do break in and are armed, I'd bet good money that you know both who they are (or who sent them) and why they are there.
