Definately not paying cahncil tax anymore if this is how they are spending it.

I drive under one of these twice a week on the A11/A47 at the Thickthorn Services. Wassat all about then?

Daily Telegraph said:
Bridges too far? The £500,000 bat crossings
Civil servants have come under fire for spending half a million pounds of taxpayers' money - on building bridges for bats.

The Highways Agency has spent almost £500,000 on the five bridges across Norfolk in the past three years.

Now it wants to build six more bridges - which direct them over busy roads to avoid being hit by cars - as part of plans to widen the A11 near Thetford, Norfolk.

Bats? What Bats that fly and have Radar and st?

You have got to be fking kidding me. Bridges for ing bats? Do bats walk over the fking road?
What an absolute load of fking bks. To think that I'm fking paying through the ahole for council tax just for some Bunny Bat Hugging, fking sandal wearing, knit your own fking tampon tt to decide to spend half a million on fking Bat Bridges absolutely fking astounds me.

What next for the little furry fkers? Tunnels for fking Moles to cross the road? Trebuchets and fking airbag landing strips for Hedgehogs? s.

Still, at least there's plenty of fking money left for Lollipop ladies and Meals on Wheels.

No, wait. mad

I've seen a lot of roadkill but never once a bat.

For the first time in my life (to my knowledge) I actually smashed a bat up the face with the windscreen of my car the other week.

I've got resident bats in the loft. So wasn't best pleased with myself tbh.

Maybe local council could provide hi-vis bat vests?

Umm, leaving aside the sanity (or otherwise) of the bat-bridge concept, I don't quite see how Norfolk CC can be blamed when this appears to be a Highways Agency project...

How did they manage to spend £500,000 on some scaffolding and some netting?

£50,000 to build it and £450,000 to have meetings about building it?

See those power lines? It's to stop them falling on the road whilst they're being worked on.

If they are that important then what about a mesh fence on either side of the road about 50ft high. Wouldn't cost even a 10th of the price of the over the road one.

Started sedate and informative.

Funny picture

Then you let rip!

Quality little rant!

I agree, can't recall ever hitting a bat. Does seem a fantastic waste of money.

If bats are so crap they can't deal with roads so be it, doesn't bother me if they go extinct.

There is one of these on the A10 near Kings Lynn. I thought it was something to do with the national grid power lines which are directly above it......

Regardless of the sense or otherwise of this project, that's an incredibly ignorant point of view you've got there.

Don't be silly, the meeting costs are on top of the half a million pound platinum plated scaffolding hehe

OMG! The picture is actually in the Telegraph article.

For those who aren't sure what's going on, here's what a bat bridge looks like:

...and as it turns out, they are required where a hedgerow has been removed that bats are accustomed to fly along.

Personally, I'm less fussed about my tax money being spent on nice things like bats than I am about it being showered on the idle and feckless.

So, the Telegraph ran the wrong picture. Big deal. I'm not getting "Ambwilanced" over that matey biggrin

The bridges for flying animals are real though, hence the point of my rant.

What happens when bats want to cross the other 10,000 miles of road. Do they walk for months along the grass verge until they come to a bat bridge? What a load of crap, who comes up with this nonsense?

This sounds very similar to Moss from 'The IT Crowd'. He invented a ladder for trapped moths to climb out of a bath.

P.s if these bats are clever enough to learn how to use a bridge they'd be clever enough not to fly into a VW Polo or an ice cream van.

Er... The nets were put there to stop power lines falling in the road whilst maintenance work was carried out on the pylons.

Not 30 mins ago a bat hit my windscreen. Granted I was driving down a narrow country lane out in the sticks.

This however really is batst insane

My last house had a balcony overlooking woodland and if you stood very still late evening the bats would swoop to within inches of your face, so close you could hear their wings rustle, but they never actually hit you. Unlike the birds which crashed into the windows on average once a fortnight. Maybe we should a different type of bridge for every species of animal, to be on the safe side.
