Poor bugger. I can just imagine the horrible mix of lack of confidence (to tackle doctors), lack of money, organisation skills etc etc that lead to people in general not getting needed medical care - this is obviously a really awful extreme example of that. Surely there's some doctor in the States that will sort this guy out gratis - the opportunity to write a paper on it (or at least about it...) would probably cover most of the costs anyway.

yes

Especially in the states - I've seen an itemised bill for a baby's neonatal intensive care stay which came to almost $4 million - nursing so much per day x 70-odd days, 'consults' (eg ward rounds) every day x 70-odd days, every nappy and bottle and new IV line, formula, the repeat abdominal ultrasounds etc etc etc. It's horrific.

$1m for one biggish and delicate (!!) op doesn't surprise me at all - a couple of days recovery on intensive care would on its own be about a fifth to a quarter of that.

70 days? It's expensive to stay in hospital for 70 days?

Thanks for the info. I'm finding this very enlightening, as I was only born yesterday. Keep it up. thumbup

Am sure there's a more official term for these doctors

Maybe he should have got it sorted when he first injured himself? I'm not normally one to go rushing to the doctor but I think I'd be there pretty sharpish if my balls were the size of footballs.

I'm sorry if i was a bit short, but $1m for an operation seems ridiculous. Over here a hip/knee replacement is about £10-15k as far as I know. It seems totally out of proportion to charge $1m for something like that. The best thing he could do is what we do, and get it done in India.

Where does the justification for the $1m come from?
