An end to Primogeniture

Pleased to see we're still changing stuff that's overdue to be changed, disagree with the "important issues" comment.
As I understand this was a vote in the commonwealth, well overdue. Sometimes, like a fresh coat of paint, actikn/maintainance isn't essential but good housekeeping that we'd be worse off without.

Why is an outdated and utterly irrelevant organisation like the Commonwealth voting on anything at all to do with Great Britain? The thought that such a pointless cabal should have any influence is frightening.unrepentant said:

Well, the Royal Family are outdated and utterly irrelevant as well? Good for tourism and so worth the money, but that's about it..unrepentant said:

I have vast preference for the commonwealth over the EU, especially given the red carpet non-action this week.A bunch of countries who act in their own interest who happen to have a head of state in common. The EU could learn from the structure and purpose of the commonwealth in its current form.

Without them we'd have President Blair. Disagree about relevance too.

I understand that we proposed it as farThe commonwealth is largely made up of dictators and despots and should have no say whatsoever in anything to do with the running of GB, constitutional or otherwise.
back as the 60s, only now have we bothered getting it approved. I don't see any harm in having the Queen as head of state for countries around the world for the UK.
As I say, far happier to have these countries not dictating to us than the EU feeling it has the right to dictate. In fact I'm surprised it hasn't told us we need to become a republic yet.

It wasn't the Commonwealth, it was the 16 Commonwealth Realms. And it has everything to do with them. The Queen is not just Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, she is also
Queen of Antigua and Barbuda
Queen of Australia
Queen of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas
Queen of Barbados
Queen of Belize
Queen of Canada
Queen of Grenada
Queen of Jamaica
Queen of New Zealand
Queen of Papua New Guinea
Queen of Saint Kitts and Nevis
Queen of Saint Lucia
Queen of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Queen of the Soloman Islands
Queen of Tuvalu
Each of these are independent and sovereign nations with their own monarchies and lines of succession in their own right. For example, when the Queen visits Canada, she does so as Queen of Canada, not as Queen of the UK, and consequently the Royal Canadian Air Force fly her rather than British Airways and the Canadian Government picks up the bill. If any realm wishes to alter their line of succession, they need the approval of the other realms to ensure the continuity (lest you end up with an older Queen in some realms and her younger brother as King in others).
The bond between the Commonwealth Realms and the wider Commonwealth itself are far more worthy institutions than the EU.

Good to see the Govt concentrating on the really important issues...
Ah, but they are.You see, the UK is broke and many UK assets that were/are owned by European entities are up for sale and need buyers.
It's important to note that both Canada and Australia are resource rich, booming members of the Commonwealth with good ties to the UK.
It was no accident that Wills and Kate were sent to Canada to woo the natives and let them know that they are hugely important to the monarchy (ie Britain) and it is no co-incidence that DC has flown down to Aus and made this announcement from there, nor that the Queen is there at present. It is a charm offensive to remind the Aussies that we think they are highly important.
Now, why chose Canada and Australia. Well, OK their enormous natural resources mean that that they are booming and have plenty of cash, we also need friends on the political stage. However, these two countries have something in common which is extremely important to us. Both of them have a law that x amount of a worker's income must be paid into a state managed pension fund. These pension funds are massive. Absolutely massive. And they have to invest overseas.
Since Wills and Kate's visit to the North American colonials the level of investment into the UK from the Canadian state funds has increased dramatically. They are become important players in the commercial property market in the UK at a time when earlier players like the Irish and others are having to leave the market and their lenders are cashing in what is left of their portfolios.
So, there is an extremely good reason why we are down in Aus this week telling them that we really like them and respect them so much that we will make this importnat announcement on the monarchy in their capital city.
DC does actually appear to be playing the Great Game quite well outside of the UK, to be honest. For 500 years the European powers have wanted to take what we have and want to see us subservient to them and this hasn't changed at all. The Franks are trying their best to kill London so they get the volume. When Britain needs friends, and right now we do, we can't turn to the Europeans, We know that the Americans, Chinese and Russians will screw us, we can only turn to the same friends that we always have in the past and this is what we are doing at the moment.
