Who is the cleverest politician in the last 100 years, across the world? My vote goes to Tony Blair - the man is a genius. Anyone disagree?

I have to agree with Bigdog, the way he shafted Brown was pure genius.

Cleverest? In what sense? The man was a disaster for Britain.

I'm sure all on PH would say it's Michael Foot for campaigning to withdraw from EEC.

Blair was a genius - granted he was a lying, slimy, manipulative, egotistical, hypocritical however as a politician he did his job (staying in power) brilliantly. The media, the opposition, rebel Labour MPs could not get anywhere near him.

The fact that he was part of the Iraq concealment yet still won a general election after this is outstanding. He may not have been the best for the nation but I'd put him right up there as 'cleverest'.

Edited that for accuracy.

A vile, self surving, power mad, lying hypocrite.

Clever yes, good for those around him and those who expect him to be an effective and good leader? Definately no.

Greatest leader = Churchill

Greatest politition = Tony Benn

Greatest PM = Thatcher, but to be honest, she does not have much competition. They have all had major problems.

Gorbachev - for his contribution to managing the (relatively) peaceful break up of the USSR and thawing of the cold war.

A fairly positive impact on the lives of millions by someone who was at times in a pretty precarious position himself, he provided a template for peaceful reform and must have had great political prowess to achieve that.

He may have started out as a communist but has always campaigned for greater democratic powers in Russia and still does.

Probably Maggie. Dont particularly like her, but she played the miners with military precision.

Bliar has a natural gift, no doubt about it. He certainly comes across as the kind of person who could charm the knickers off a nun. Setting up Brown shouldnt be difficult though, and certainly wouldnt take much intelligence. Now, Brown, there's an idiot.

Depends what you want to achieve. Whilst maybe most are self centred gits, not all are, and i wouldnt measure intelligence purely by bank balance at death.
