Following on to some extent from How Far Will House Prices Fall vol 56 - I thought we should have a thread on house prices over the years.

I am always amazed with current prices - how much longer is it all going to continue with first time buyer problems?

Anyway I bought my first house in Coventry, terraced two up two down....but it did have a double garage at the bottom of the garden (and by the time I'd finished space to park another four in the back garden). 1980 - 12,500 pounds or exactly 2 1/2 times earnings, only 30 years ago.

I fully paid it off in under five years. (but that is another story).

Now I see these houses are selling for nearly 100,000!

What hope is there for the next generation?

1. 12,500
2. Coventry
3. 1980
4. Two up, two down terraced.

I bought a nice 2 bed flat in Coventry (a st area, CV3 ) a few months ago for £30k. Depends on you wanting a house or an aspirational lifestyle.

Sadly sold not long after for about £1000 profit, renting since due to various factors.

http://www.upmystreet.com suggests one of the neighbouring houses sold for £153,000 in 2004 and sold again for £152,200 in September of this year.

£6400 detached three bedroom with GFCH in Cotgrave Nottinghamshire in 1972.

Really excellent little house neo georgian, bow windows, bottle glass panes not run of the mill all rendered Tyrolean finish. Georgian type portico over the door. We loved it. I loved my wife.

It was excellent value and undoubtedly one of the best buys I ever made. Our first daughter was born whilst we were there in 1974.

We sold it for £10,500 in 1975 move to a five bedroom house and off we went playing happy families. I recommend it. Greatest pleasure I ever had and I have had a lot of pleasure.

Fond memories to this day.
