Chris Evans was talking about this yesterday.
Lymington Cricket club my be forced to close because of the danger of someone outside the ground being hit by a stray ball off the back of a 6.
OK, so it's not happened in almost 200 years, but that's irrelevant..

(apologies for linking to the "Wail")

I suspect the council want to build on it instead!

Hmmm... I wonder how all the other village cricket clubs handle this? Maybe they do a proper risk assessment, demonstrate it is low risk and perhaps insure against the risk of a claim.

Would it really cost £50K to put some netting up? I'd echo the statement about the council wanting to sell the land off.

I was of the opinion that 50k was a little steep, it transpires that a neighbouring tennis club made a complaint, so maybe they want to expand.

I do think it's sad that we could loose 200 years of history because some bloody pen pusher..

The cynic in me reckons that the netting would have to come from a Council approved supplier.

There's a club in a similar position around here. The club has had surrounding land built on it (apartments/houses) and they are in such proximity that the club has now been banned from playing any 'home' games.

Strikes me as odd as, firstly the cricket ground was there first & secondly the council approved the planning for the houses knowing full well about the cricket club. Money money money.

Farkin' nimbys!!!!

We have the same round here with people who have bought houses near Farnborough airfield (or London Farnborough as I believe it can officially be called, with the code of EGLF).
The airfield's been there since the early 1900s.
There's an airshow there every 2 years in the summer.
There's a hefty number of bizjet flights each week.

And they keep moaning about the aircraft ffs!!!!
I'd swap houses with them - as long as I got to see the landings and could walk to the airshow - seeing as they get free tickets by way of "compensation"!!!

Same as pretty much every airfield / airport.. when I used to live in Hounslow, everyone used to moan about the Heathrow noise. Not giving any consideration to a) the time it had been there and b) the jobs it creates!

Farnborough Hampshire? I used to live near there and the noise was never an issue. Aside from the road traffic caused by the visitors to the air show you'd hardly notice it was there.

When did you move away? I still would not call it noisy, but the air traffic has increased a lot over the years since TAG brought it...

About 6 years ago. Used to go to college in Farnborough and had loads of friends in the area.

And I'm sure that none of them go to the airshow when provided with free tickets, in protest, do they...

That's what really makes me sick when hearing about things like this. People piss and moan about things like this to get their voices heard. 99% it probably isn't an issue, but as soon as one jobsworth gets a bee in their bonnet about something incredibly normal, the world and their fat-arsed wives want a piece of the compensation too.

A cricket ground is something that is hard to come by now in some parts of the country for developers have grabbed pretty much every other piece of land that they can. To then prevent games from happening due to fear of people being struck by the ball could be said for any single sport or hobby there is. They'll cancel that airshow at Farnborough next (I watch from my parents house in Frimley), incase one of the planes crashes on take off and heads towards a spectator area.

So sad to now live in a society that will sue anyone and anything at the first opportunity.
