Mersey Tunnels - **Strike Content**
Discussion
So it turns out that the Mersey Tunnels are staffed by union people.

The only time I see Mersey Tunnel staff is if I've forgotten my Smarttag and need change. Basically you hane over a note and get the change back at a kiosk.
I'm sure staff do other tasks but nothing vitally important.
Tunnel police take care of any emergency and accident incidents (they are not on strike).
So I thought they would leave the barriers up and let people use it for free, or something equally sensible.
Nope. They shut them both. 95,000 vehicles per day.
So an extra 9kgs of carbon (via Runcorn). Plus a tenner in petrol, plus an extra hour lost that day. For me alone.
Why do we need people changing coins in this day and age?? Job creation??
And how can 50 odd people cause so much chaos, pollution and time theft?

• Closure of Kingsway and Queensway Tunnels - Wednesday 30 November 2011
As a Fast Tag Account holder, and therefore a regular user of the Mersey Tunnels, it is with regret that we write to inform you of a planned full closure of the two Mersey Tunnels, Wallasey and Birkenhead, on Wednesday 30th November 2011.
At the time of writing, Merseytravel has received formal notification via Trade Unions of planned industrial action across the public sector on Wednesday 30th November 2011. It is expected that this industrial action will involve members of staff involved in the operation of the Mersey Tunnels and will therefore impact on the safe operation of the two Tunnels. It is for safety reasons that the two Tunnels will be closed.
The attached link to our website details the actual times associated with this closure. Please be aware that the closure will commence at 23.45 hours on 29th November 2011, and we will be open as normal from 00.15 hours on 1st December 2011. Our latest press release is also included on our website under "Latest News" and we will be utilising the local press to make our users aware of this closure as much as possible. Of course, should this position change as the date approaches we will obviously communicate that as widely as possible too.
You may also wish to note that this planned closure update via our website is updated weekly and may be a useful site for you to visit in the future when service returns to normal.

Can you not just sack the militant scum and replace them with people who actually want a job?

That's the sensible option, one that would get the public onside. Closing up won't help their case if everyone inconvenienced thinks that they're a bunch of workshy tossers. In Italy ('70s/'80s) they would often have national strikes, the motorway toll booth workers would simply sit in their booths with the barrier open letting people through for free; inconvenienced no-one, the public actually approved and supported such action with the bonus that the authorities were getting no revenue for the road use.
They really haven't thought this through...

I was in Paris a few years ago when the Metro workers did the same thing. Just opened all the gates and refused to collect fares. If you're going to do it, that, strikes (no pun!) me as far more sensible. Directly impacts the employer without impacting Joe Public. In Italy ('70s/'80s) they would often have national strikes, the motorway toll booth workers would simply sit in their booths with the barrier open letting people through for free; inconvenienced no-one, the public actually approved and supported such action with the bonus that the authorities were getting no revenue for the road use.
