"The deputy prime minister said ministers would announce plans to "get tough" on excessive boardroom pay in January and may legislate if necessary."

Who would have thought it!

Of course it's not, and it hasn't been in the lifetime of anyone reading this now.

As soon as the government knows your income, which they have made it their business too since 1798, then it is not private, and the game of government is to extract as much as they possibly can from you without you buggering off to Switzerland.

I dont care if they make salaries public (i think they do in some european countries) so long as they make peoples benefit payments public knowledge too.

I wonder how many people I know of are claiming incapacity scratchchin

Farcical.

I think Parliament should legislate against idiot inheritors benefiting from fathers in high faluting financial circles and mothers with legacies tied to old, Russian aristocracy.

This country gets more politics of envy everyday.

How can you show how much an executive has saved in a recession?

How much should a chancellor be paid when he got the figures so wrong over a 6 month period.

I wish those people who keep threatening to leave really would leave.

That way they'll be better off (I assume) and the rest of us will appreciate what we've lost.

Of course I'm sure they won't come running back when things don't turn out to be the nectar and ambrosia they thought it would.

What the hell does boardroom pay have to do with government? confused

I also assume we'll be able to know the pay of every public sector worker if they go ahead with this to make sure we're not overpaying for poor performing staff?

AFAIK we're already entitled to know the pay of Public Sector workers. All you would need to do is submit an FoI request asking

Names of different posts
Number of people in each post
Apy band for each post.

I don't think we're entitled to know the salaries of specific people due to DPA

By and large they dont because they cannot afford to. The only person I know who has did so against his will but for the benefit of his family as his daughter wished to be educated in England and not Germany. For this "opportunity to come running back" he took a 50% pay cut.

That's a shame, I thought that the English-speaking schools in Germany were amongst the best in the world?

If that was just for the education then it's surprising (or he was on a relatively low wage). There are plenty of excellent private schools in Germany.

Boardroom pay (certainly at the level where some might consider it "excessive") has hardly been private since the Greenbury and Hampel Reports mandated renumeration committees and the publication of all executive renumeration in the accounts.

Not sure who is asking you to "question" your boss ?? I just think it seems strange that he's sacrificed £75kpa just so his daughter can have an Education in England.

it's because he values his daughters welfare and education, more than he does money, and you can live well on 'only' £75k a year.

For less than half that he could have sent the kid to a decent public school as a boarder. Many people do.
