Is this the beginnings of a WW3? Warfare is a strong word.

Just been reading the wiki article on the islands - it does appear the Chinese have a legitimate claim (I say claim, not ownership!).

They apparently charted and claimed the islands at the same time as the Vietnamese..

Not WW3, just the next step in their 100 year plan which started with Tibet and ends with Taiwan... or possibly the subjugation of Japan.

WW3 starts in a year or two, if the hand-wringing over Iran carries on. George W Bush and Tony Blair will be remembered for effectively preventing an (arguably necessary) western conflict with Iran, by carrying out a pointless war against Iraq ten years previously which makes it politically very difficult.

With a nuclear war i'd imagine it would not matter how many aircraft carriers they have.

I think we're heading for some very dangerous times ahead.

We have the Euro collapsing, it would appear that no matter what happens it's only a matter of time.

We have Putin getting back in Russia dn the stranglehold he will then have over Energy.

We have our own (and I expect Europe's in the same boat) looming energy crisis, where it's predicted ina 5-10 years we won't have enough power produced (because windymills don't work and Nukes haven't been built to take up the slack).

We have Iran determined to develop nuclear weapons (whether they want to use them or not).

We have China increasing it's financial impact on the world and increasing it's military.

We have Russia increasing it's military.

If our politicians aren't careful I do worry that they will sleep walk into a major conflict, and who know's what the sides will be made up of.

Don't believe everything the media tell you. China has a massive mercantilist bubble, vast oversupply and looming hyperinflation and is twice as economically screwed up as the US of A

I don't think Hillary being in Myanmar recently will have helped much either.

China doesn't have any operational carriers at the moment. It has one undergoing trials. They may not have any aircraft to put on it yet either as no
one is quite sure if the Chinese knock off of the SU-33 is in production yet.

and I counter that with:
Number of active US aircraft carriers; 11
Number under construction: 2

and thats just the US.
Ju Jintao is frankly playing a bit of sabre rattling that at the moment he knows he can't back up.
They are beginning to annoy their neighbours by claiming lots of things are historically theirs. Those other countries aren't too pleased and now China has to say something to back up its claims.
At the moment this is all they have.
