In the last six months I've taken an effective 5% pay cut due to the weakening Euro. There is a chance I can change my contract to pay USD (I will push for GBP, though I think I'll be unlikely to get it). Would you stick with the EUR, or is the USD a safer bet medium-long term?

Any ideas?

My vote for USD is simple; been posted elsewhere that EUR will loose 7% anyway early next year - by ECB's own reckoning - because of lowering interest rates and QE. And that's if things don't worsen...

Do you have a link to that ECB prediction that I can include in my 'evidence' package?

Cheers.

Are you wedded to the UK? I am paid in Euros and living abroad, but have a house in the UK and plan to return. I am transferring back money regularly to ensure that the money I have is in the same currency as my mortgage.
I don´t know if the euro will fail, but I am trying to mitigate the risk. If it does fail and the currency goes badly south, I will be buying assets and bringing them back to the UK with me when I eventually come back.
Given the choice, I would move to USD at the minute if I could not have pounds.

Oh Dear, just voted and wasn't going to reply, but it ain't looking good is it?

Personally I think it's a matter of time, it's doomed.

If you have the option to switch at a reasonable cost, why not switch to dollars? Even the banks don't know what will happen to many of their contracts when the Euro goes down.

In a few months I'll have to open a Spanish Bank account. I'm hanging on to see if it will be a peseta account or the euro.
I'm hoping the former as the thing I will have to pay will be set in Euros and that means it will cost me about 3/10ths as much as it would in Euros I reckon.

They only have one way of preventing it's failure, and that is to replace hundreds of years of European democracy with an authoritarian state - a process which has been under way for some time.

Whether or not you think the EUR will survive depends entirely on whether you think they will finish the job, or whether you think the French, Germans, and citizens of other European countries will suspend them by the necks from lamp-posts with piano wire.

Fixed that for you. Just in case HMRC are watching.

Given the option, surely the question is why would you choose to be paid in euros instead of dollars?

Historically, the EUR contract has been the favoured option. It was never really a choice, it was just what was initially offered.

Also, I remember alot of guys on USD contract were burned pretty badly post 09/11

I know, just wanted to reinforce my decision really. Both currencies have been pretty volatile over the last few years though. USD makes more sense now (if I can't get GBP).

I had the option of being paid in EUR on a job offer a month or so ago. My thinking behind it was to decline, I don't pay my mortgage in € and there's too much of a chance it'll go against me if I took the chance. Negotiated a GBP contract instead but that suits my conditions better as I'll be in the UK for 10 months a year
