Reading on another forum that new emergency tax laws in Italy mean that "luxury" car tax is set annually as 10% of the cars value, eg €40,000 = €4000 per year tax and so on. Any more info around as google isn't coming up with anything.

Seems crazy if true, it will decimate new car sales and second hand values will flop.

Wouldn't second hand cars sell better, without the tax?

Vehicle taxation remains low in UK despite recent increases in cost of the tax disc. The highest overall vehicle tax appears to be in countries with no motor industry.

It must be likely the UK government will be looking for things to tax more heavily in 2012 and large cars look a soft target...

Secondhand cars also have to pay the tax.

ah...

an annual tax, I was thinking it was a one off tax.

I wonder how they'll define luxury.

Some info is contradictory, looks like 3000€ per annum per luxury car rather than 10% of value.

Why should large cars be targetted tell me?

Some of us have families and equipment to move around on a regular basis and small cars are not fit for task.

unlikely, Italians view tax avoidance as necessary as breathing

It won't work, Italy's high taxes have never worked. Even laywers and accountants (the latter being extensions of the tax office) want half of their invoices paid in cash to avoid the taxes!

I was told that most people with a really nice car in Italy arn't stupid enough to have them in their name anyway (If you buy a car in Italy, the Italian tax man needs to know by law how you could afford it and where the money came from - we had this when we bought a humble Nissan Note!) - this new tax will be counter-productive.

We left Italy because of the stupidly high taxes, now it's getting worse! Italians will simply find new ways to avoid paying the tax altogether.

This Luxury car tax will affect all cars with over 170kw engine power. Also this tax will be applied to boats, jets and helicopters.

Presumably there's a get-out clause for any cars that have little horsey badges on them.

Sort of why Italy got the 320iS back on the 80's, and not the M3
