Jeremy Clarkson is a 'luxury BBC cannot afford', MPs say

Labour MP Jim Sheridan asked several times why Mr Clarkson had not been sacked, adding: “Can I suggest to you that JC is a luxury that we can’t afford?”
Typical politician (and I'm not singling the party out here as it could have been any of them)....

Why hasn't Clarkson been sacked? Why does the BBC need him?
Maybe it's because Top Gear makes the BBC a metric arseload of money from syndicating it worldwide and from merchandise and DVD sales. Maybe that's why they need him. Maybe having a programme that actually *makes* money is a good thing?
Maybe MP Jim Sheridan should be sacked as he seems to be a greater drain on the public purse than Clarkson is.

Is that more or less than an Imperial arseload? Why hasn't Clarkson been sacked? Why does the BBC need him?

Incredible arrogance of MPs to question what is affordable.
May I ask.... are our MPs, at least most of them, luxuries we cannot afford?
I'm no great fan of Clarkson's but, to be fair, he was wildly taken out of context recently. What he said was clearly pre-scripted and tongue in cheek.

He's a Labour MP, and therefore his opinion is utterly worthless.
This! Mouth opens, effluent emerges...When the OP said "MPs" I thought he meant some kind of cross party consensus.
One labour MPs complains because Clarkson says something he doesn't agree with. He should just cry to mummy instead of wasting everyones time like this.

Mr Sheridan previously rented a flat in London’s Dolphin Square, designating the property as his second home, and reclaiming the rent of about £3,400 every quarter.
In the 2005/06 financial year, he used his second homes allowance to pay a £991.95 bill for a Memory foam mattress and "ivory leather bed". A further £500 spent on furniture and household accessories that year was also claimed on his expenses.
Gordon Brown vows to remove rule-breaking MPs 19 May 2009
Between January and April 2006, he reclaimed £699 for a three-seater sofa, £829 for a two-seater sofa bed, £219 for a coffee table and £199 for a lamp table.
In 2006/07, he bought a flat in London, designated it as his second home and started reclaiming the monthly mortgage interest of around £924.
A further £359 was claimed on his expenses for a wardrobe in August 2006, along with £299 for a chest of drawers, £159 for a bedside cabinet and £109 for a mirror.
In July that year, Mr Sheridan charged the taxpayer £1,200 for painting the ceilings, walls and woodwork in his second home.
The MP then claimed £1,280 to supply and fit a new shower, although the fees office initially threatened to withhold payment because of a lack of proper receipts. However, Mr Sheridan provided an invoice and the money was paid.
The same month, February 2007, he claimed the £595 cost of supplying and fitting three sets of blinds.
In October last year, Mr Sheridan claimed the £699.99 cost of a 42-inch plasma television, just under the £750 limit imposed by the Commons fees office. He also claimed £219.99 for a four-year warranty.

I've just posted this on the Telegraph site:
So Jim Sheridan says Clarkson is a luxury the BBC can't afford? Would that be the same Clarkson who is pretty much the face of Top Gear, a show that generated £40,000,000 in profit for the BBC from global syndication in 2010? I'd say that even if they paid Clarkson £1,000,000 a year, he's still phenomenal value for money.
On the other hand, we have Jim Sheridan. The same Sheridan who claimed:
In fact, I would suggest that Jim Sheridan can FRO.

On the other hand, we have Jim Sheridan. The same Sheridan who claimed:
- £13,600 in rent expenses per year until 2005
- £1,000 for a memory foam mattress and bed
- £500 on 'household accesories'
- £700 for a 3-seater sofa
- £830 for a sofa bed
- £930 a month in mortgage interest payments from 2005/6 on
- £360 for a wardrobe
- £300 for a chest of drawers
- £160 for a bedside cabinet
- £1,200 for painting and decorating
- £1,300 for a new shower
- £600 for blinds
- £700 for a 42" plasma TV
- £220 for the extended warranty on said TV
In fact, I would suggest that Jim Sheridan can FRO.
