A very good, well balanced letter to Frau Merkel, your thoughts.

Known for their balance, the express,

(and seed offers, those comfy slipper boots, 2 pairs of shoes for £29.99, trips to norfolk on a coach.)

Well-written piece and something I quite agree with.

The point about Merkel protecting the German automotive industry is well made, as she's done exactly that in recent years.

Der Spiegel online said:
Merkel is Mercedes' Chief Lobbyist in Brussels

When it comes to cars, the only thing Merkel has lost is her credibility. She is already the chief lobbyist for Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche in Brussels, where CO2 limits for the European Union are currently being negotiated. New Franco-German talks on the issue are scheduled for next week.

France, which tends to manufacture smaller cars than Germany, wants to see emissions limits imposed that would make things difficult for large, powerful, German-produced sedans. Merkel, for her part, wants to put a stop to the limits, a move that would be good for the German automobile industry but bad for the climate.

It's a shame we don't have the balls to run, defend and support our own country in a similar way, come hell or high water.

The point being that her actions with regard to the German car industry are no different to Cameron's in relation to the UK financial sector. German outrage at Cameron's veto is therefore rather hypocritical.

Which are Cuban. At the time they were friendly, of course. And I expect after the revolution they came in the diplomatic bag, which strictly speaking isn't even smuggling. biggrin

I enjoyed that letter! I feel we have had our epiphany moment now and it is evident, from the bitter attitudes shown and callous words said by many continental MEPs and leaders, that these guys are not our friends and we are best rid of them.

And also the French reliance on the CAP.
I am 50 years old but I still remember our teacher struggling in school to explain how it was a good thing.

I work in Finance. I'm not a banker though have worked in the 'square mile' before.

What's so wrong with that - it's what I/We do as a country.
I pay my 40% tax etc etc just as the guy who screws a VW together does, or the bloke who, ermm eats cheese and drinks wine and drives a 30 year old renault...soapbox

All a bit rambling for my tastes.

Also his "you made it, you mend it" advice is just as well suited to the government of this country. The real mess is not France and Germany seeking to tax the city, it's the fact that due to decades of entanglement with the European project there's a serious prospect that they are able to do so. Withdraw from the European Union and this disappears at a stroke. Stay in and the same will come up again and again until they get their way.

CMD's handbag waving, like Thatcher's before creates nothing but a more comfortable prison cell, but they dare not open the door.

He is not known as a stupid man nor someone who will not stand up for what he believes in. He seems like a pretty decent bloke really, can't disagree with what he's said.
