So German executives of a German firm agree to pay sweeteners to Argentine officials in Argentina.

Nothing to do with the USA whatsoever.

But our septic chums, bless them, have taken great offense and are probably about to chuck the German executives of a German firm into an American gaol for doing something that is really none of their business.

Sometimes it is easy to see why Americans are not popular in some parts of the world.

Would anyone be surprised if the billion dollar contract that was going to Siemens now went to a US company?

"In 2008, Siemens agreed to pay $1.6bn to the US and German authorities to resolve charges of corrupt practices in connection with the case, and helped in the investigation of those charged, officials said."

..and Germany and the US would turn a blind eye for $1.6bn?

Money went through the States, so they're perfectly entitled to get involved. This isn't like the "Natwest 3".

If they routed dodgy money through the US in full knowledge of the Patriot Act etc then they need locking up for stupidity.

The money doesn't even have to go through the States, it just has to be involving a US company. I was on the periphery of a case like this a few years ago when we were trying to get gear out of Customs in West Africa. Soon as the SEC got a whiff, the US company blew the whistle on the whole game. Everyone involved had their laptops seized and searched and anyone with the wrong word in an e-mail lost their jobs. Some senior guys who just thought they were getting the job done were binned...

Actually I like the idea that bribery is stamped on wherever it is.

The sooner dishonest people are shot/jailed and honesty praised the better this world will be.

Is that the bribers or bribees you would shoot / jail? I doubt very much the Siemens execs had forced the Argentine officials to take the money. And are those officials also going to be charged by the authorities, US or Argentine, I wonder?

All dishonest people? Really?

In this case the urine evaporator is not that bribery is stamped on per se, but that the Americans are claiming jurisdiction over a matter that should more properly be left to the German and Argentines to sort out.

But if they used American based accounts and companies to pass the money on then they have broken American law. At least the Americans take that kind of thing seriously while the Swiss give the appearance of trying to encourage it.
