Up to 13,500 military personnel will help to provide security at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Ministry of Defence has announced.

Security would be police-led but the military would make a "significant contribution", the MoD said.

Some 5,000 troops will support the police, up to 7,500 will provide venue security and 1,000 will provide logistical support.

Last week, ministers revised the Games security budget from £282m to £553m.

In addition to the 13,500 figure, there will be a 1,000-strong unarmed contingency force ready for deployment in the event of an "Olympics-related civil emergency".

It's a teeny bit more than that.

A few million will be attending, though. And that's only counting those invited (if you know what I mean).

I can't think of a more appropriate time.

Our forces in Afghanistan are currently around 9,500 strong. The majority of this force is deployed in the south. In addition, the UK also provides service personnel in support of the Headquarters for the ISAF and for OEF, both of which are in Kabul."

So we have martial law now or what? I mean, I don't know if the BBC were "lefting" or what but what I heard was a battleship on the Thames and a number of attack helicopters flying at all times!?!?

I thought they airbrushed the Belfast out of the Olympic posters?

We've had a Destroyer parked up at Tower Bridge for a while. About time she saw action again.

More seriously I understand Ocean will be moored at Greenwich and Bulwark will be taking in the rays at Weymouth.

I hope not. I couldn't stand more than two weeks of people running in circles.

According to both local TV news Ocean will be parked at Greenwich and Typhoons will be based at Northolt for the duration of the games plus 'numerous' surface-to-air missile sites.

Would be pretty cool to see the Typhoons patrolling over London IMO.

They probably still don't have any guns to shoot Johnny Terrorist with.

Don't worry. We can always trust the MoD to spend our money effeciently. If they say 13.5k troops are needed, they who are we to argue otherwise.
