A CANCER victim who lost his leg in a battle with the disease has had his benefits stopped and told he must go back to work.
Eddie Kewley, of Laycock Gate, Layton, was confined to a wheelchair after he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his left leg was amputated four years ago.
But following a medical assessment under tough new Government guidelines, the 40-year-old has been passed fit by doctors and his payments were stopped immediately.
Mr Kewley’s Emergency and Support Allowance (ESA) payments were stopped in March and the former labourer says he will soon have no money left unless his case is re-looked at.
Limb
He told The Gazette: “Every job I’ve had since I left school has been manual labour and I think they are expecting me to work in an office, which I’m not qualified for.”
The father-of-two does have a prosthetic limb, but is unable to wear it after falling and injuring his knee six months ago and is now awaiting an operation.
He added: “To be awarded ESA you need to get more than 15 points in your assessment but I was only awarded nine because I can propel myself in a wheelchair.
“I thought they were having a laugh when they told me. It’s absolutely ridiculous because I’m not capable of working.
Bullst. He's lost half his leg and whilst it is unfortunate he had cancer I'm not sure why he now feels he's unable to work. Well, apart from the huge sense of entitlement obviously.Eddie Kewley, of Laycock Gate, Layton, was confined to a wheelchair after he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his left leg was amputated four years ago.

If he can find someone who will employ a disabled person that is. Let's face, we are not awash with jobs in the UK right now let alone job where a company will have to make changes to accomodate him!?!?
He could make a living going for interviews and then claiming he'd been discriminated against. Oakey said:

Agreed, and I'm a wheelchair user. He loses that allowance because they say he's able to work, and he is, as if they'd be telling him to get a job he isn't capable of being helped into or couldn't be trained for... and the sob story about money is a poor excuse, he qualifies for higher rate DLA...Exactly the same thing happened to my cousin as this person, yet he still works as an accountant in an upstairs office of a building with no lift.

I'm a truck driver. Almost every single truck I drive nowadays is automatic.
With the greatest respect to this chap, I could still carry on working with only my right leg.
I'm sure there are lots of jobs he could do. In fact, as companies like to tick the "we've got disabled employees" box, he would be more likely to get some of them.

He also smokes, owns a dog, owns and drives a car and spends his time playing his Xbox 360.So how many/much of your limbs do you need to lose before you are now classed as disabled by the system...
...what of our soldiers at Headley Court [and afterwards once booted out of the forces] are they going to be judged the same way??....
Not so smarmy now, are we...[not you Eric, just the whole thread]

However tragic the individual circumstances, the fact is this is a forty year old man. He may only have had manual labourer type of jobs previously, but should he be expecting 25 years of disability handouts, followed by a state pension.
In my opinion he should not, his attitude is clearly his biggest handicap, not his leg.
Apparently the world does owe him a living, he still gets his housing benefit and JSA ...

How many limbs do you need to lose before you cannot possibly get a job? Someone without a leg can get a job. ...what of our soldiers at Headley Court [and afterwards once booted out of the forces] are they going to be judged the same way??....

The disability rules don't take into consideration the manner in which the disability occured. A persion who has no use of his legs is treated the same, no matter whether his legs were lost due to enemy action or disease....what of our soldiers at Headley Court [and afterwards once booted out of the forces] are they going to be judged the same way??....
