This was one damn complicated landing sequence, I am pleasantly surprised it all went off well. Great job folks!

Great news!

This caused me to smile though:

deputy head of the rover's descent and landing team said:
I can't believe this. This is unbelievable.
Confident in your team and work then?! laugh

I've been enjoying following this story, it's a bit hidden under all the Olympic news of course.

If you're on twitter you can follow the Rover itself (although I have a sneaking feeling the tweets are sent from Earth wink ) they've already posted a few pics. Just B&W at the moment, although they've removed the clear dust cover now so you can see a bit more.

I know there have been Rovers before, but such a large one, 1 Tonne I'm told, has to be a hell of a step towards the first manned mission to Mars, I'm reasonably certain I'll see a Man on Mars in my lifetime.

They were understandably nervous about the final descent, the sky crane hadn't been tested IIRC.

Really? I'd have thought testing that over in Arizona or Nevada would have had some crane action; maybe not.
This rover is different than the previous ones, as was noted earlier, in size. It also has more HD cams and a laser capable of vaporizing a rock and gathering the particles for testing. Cool gadgets! smile

It was the headline news on Radio 4 this morning - ahead of the Olympics. Probably because Britain had such a rotten day on Sunday, only winning two golds and a hatful of Silvers.

Being discussed in depth here - with lots of good links for those who want to follow the mission even closer.

It's the choice of words - being nervous is fine and expected, stating that it's unbelievable implies that you didn't believe it would happen!

I know its in the news, the fact a thread appeared in the news section sort gives the game away if no one was aware. Tis why I used small words, meant to symbolise a small hint just in case anyone wanted to look over there whilst not saying do not look here.

Us Space Cadets have been talking about this mission in the Science Forum for months now.

It's the nature of PH these days to have threads covering similar topics in various places.
