In a message to fans on his website, the former Smiths frontman wrote: “I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism?
“The ‘dazzling royals’ have, quite naturally, hi-jacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness.
“As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters. Meanwhile the British media present 24-hour coverage of the ‘dazzling royals’, laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole.

The Smiths' musical legacy is fabulous. Unfortunately, Morrissey has never understood that people liked the Smiths' music and their amusing, clever lyrics. Nobody ever took him seriously as a social or political ocmmentator and he makes a fool of himself just about every time he opens his mouth other than to sing.

indeed, it's sometimes almost embarrassing to enjoy his music knowing the personality behind it!FourWheelDrift said:
Morrisey lives in the USA the land of patriotism and home of jingoism. Which makes his rant even more laughable.

Also his pauper status really underpins all the rhetoric about economic nhard times suffering.
He's entitled to comment of course, but it would be better for him not to...

In all honesty I never took him seriously as a song writer or musician, either. The Smiths were different and engendered a touching loyalty but real musical/lyrical talent? Well it's all subjective I suppose.

What a twunt. I've watched quite a bit of the olympics and haven't seen a royal yet. Most people from whatever country are proud of it, I've seen winners from GB, USA, Jamaica etc approriately waving flags. I think this is a bit of journalistic trolling - it's not like Morrissey has any status beyond Z-list celeb of yesteryear.
