So Sergio Garcia gets hauled up for inviting Tiger for some fried chicken...this food, I presume is considered a black 'ghetto food' and the fact that Garcia has used this food stuff the remark is to be considered derogatory and possibly RACIST!

So...if he had invited Lee Westwood for fish & chips, Colin Montgomery for haggis or Rory McElroy for a Guinness this wouldn't be derogatory because these are national dishes that these golfers would be proud to eat/drink.

So lets say for arguments sake that Mr Woods was invited for Jerk chicken, rice & peas a typically 'black' dish (although not American) would this be considered derogatory? Possibly not.

Does this mean that the 'racist' remark has boiled down to how the chicken was cooked or am I missing something?

Yes, Fuzzy said it first but it was construed as being a possibly racist moment then too.

My question still stands about whether how the chicken was cooked defines the possibly racist overtone of the comment.

Not so much over here, but in the US, black people eating fried chicken is a racial stereotype.

Wikipedia explains the background quite well - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fried_chicken#History

So, is Jerk chicken a stereo type as well as being Jamaican national dish?

And anyway, whats so wrong with a racial stereotype? The French DO eat frogs legs, the English DO eat roast beef, Germans DO eat bratwurst!

Oh, hang on a minute....I havn't mentioned anyone of 'colour' have I?

Do Indians eat curry or is that just Englishmen?

I'm walking on eggshells here! wink

I find it rather odd as well. It's the sort of insult that kids throw at each other (or certainly did when I was at school when palates were a bit less diversified). But in this modern culinary age, I find it weird that a grown man [like Tiger Woods] could get upset over a foodie insult (even with the historical context to slave food in the US). He might have been better off not responding, in the long term, and be the first generation to 'reclaim the fried chicken' as it were. Just to add I have a soft-spot for KFC and Fried Chicken in general.

I'm guessing Sergio knew exactly what he meant, other wise he wouldn't have been apologising so profusely in order to placate his sponsors.

Doesn't stop the rest of us being confused about how we talk to fellow workmates/golf partners/shop assistants etc especially if they're 'of colour'.

Tbh I don't think you need to worry. It's never the words which are offensive, it's the intention.

For example - to the vast majority of people suggesting that somebody be served Fried Chicken would be completely inoffensive. However Sergio knew what he was saying AND he most definitely knew its connotations amongst black people.

Are you certain that he didn't just assume that all Americans eat fried chicken?!

Yes. Because if his intention wasn't meant to be racist he wouldn't be apologising so profusely.

AFAIK he hasn't even denied the racist connotations, has he?

bks. It's the possibility that his sponsors might be considering it racist that has him on the run, he may, or may not, have intended anything or nothing from it in a derogatorily racist sense but he knows where his next KFC bucket meal is coming from.

So why has he not stated that his intention wasn't racist?

I intend to offend everyone. If I offend a black person, is that still racist?

I think I need to attend an equality group too as I was unaware of how racist a fried chicken is.
