So what jobs will the HS2 create?
Discussion
We've all read how the HS2 is going to be the savour of the economy, and creat a few billion jobs. But I've never yet seen a list of just what jobs it's going to create, and how this happens. Personaly, I think it's all government bulls
t. £60 billion or so invested directly into industry would be far more rewarding.
t. £60 billion or so invested directly into industry would be far more rewarding. It won't.
It was a vanity project by the Labour Party to secure votes in the North and from the Unions.
The Coalition for some reason didn't tin it and have now made it their baby and haven't the balls to back out of it.
Far smarter to have built a new hub city on the Canary Wharf model to the north of London which all major cities could then link to if they wanted to and could raise the private money to do so.
That would have shifted jobs and homes out of London and allowed firms to pay less to source workers from other cities.

You do know its about 28 billion not 60 billion dont you?
Over the course of 20 years.
Alternative is to spend the same on the existing network but including massive disruption at weekends.
I'll take HS2 anytime ta.
Ok. Tell me ANY government project that's come in on time and within budget. And I mean those meeting the ORIGINAL budget, not the moving target one. (Olympics example).Over the course of 20 years.

This is all I can think of, but short on time. But remember it is a brand new line, new track, new stations and more importantly new demand.
You can't just go and order a million tonnes of ballast or 4000 OHLE spans and not create a job and a supply chain with it.
But I can see your point, the government has stated it will create x amount of jobs, but when all done and dusted, how many of these are permanent?
You won't need to employ someone who runs the rock crushing machine to make ballast forever.
Although the supply chain for a depot is huge.

Biggest waste of money in my lifetime behind the cinema tickets for Prometheus.

On a serious note - I couldn't give a monkey spunk about it; I'll be dead by the time it gets finished in all probability, and even if I'm not I doubt I'd be able to afford to use it anyway if rail fare rises continue the way they are going.
I look forward to seeing the cost of the tickets too. I think it's already been demonstrated that commuter prices to London are already the most expensive in Europe (to other capitol cities) by some magnitude - and surely they'll be even more expensive on this thing.
Problem is it's extremely hard to trust or believe in the government these days - they could have the most awesome, clearly excellent project in the pipeline which won't cost a lot and which will deliver fantastic returns - and I'd still be sceptical of it.
