Having lived in China for a number of years very recently, I know first hand how hard the students work.

I was recently looking through one of my young 14 year old nephews school work books.
I was blown away by what they were learning, at such a young age.

I wonder how their results would look if China were represented as a country not just two of its largest cities wink

That's what you get when you remove all rigour, discipline, and the requirement to perform under pressure from the education system in order to make girls look better than boys (ooooh controversial - but true).

Finland does indeed have excellent education systems, and some excellent attitudes to it.

They have the industries and plenty of people to work in them,
they have the educated people and plenty of them too.

Time to start learning Chinese. wink

A natural result of having no meaningful independent benchmarking of UK educational standards against the world's best and a system that is measured on success criteria that can be influenced by the bodies involved.

Also, do the poorer kids in Shanghai get an education in an establishment that is included in these figures?

Are you saying the system is fixed somehow in favour of girls?

I question the validity of these tests.
In my humble experience graduates of the HK schooling system or any other system for that matter do not appear to be far better than those of the UK, America or any other decadent westerner education system.
Perhaps it is an issue of rote learning? It may help to achieve high test scores but does not help you when the problem is not defined for you.

This!

I despair that today's figures will just bring more political manipulation upon a service that has been destroyed by successive governments kicking it around like a football.

Interesting that Scotland shows a slight advantage over the rest of the UK. Expect that not to last when the effects of Scotland's shambolic attempt to switch wholesale to an outcome-based education system eventually filter through....

This can't be true; British kids achieve record exam results every year.

From my experience at uni, the Chinese kids were good at plagiarism but not exactly good at original thought. Having said that, in one particular robotics assignment a huge amount of them got done for that, so perhaps they weren't that good at plagiarism either!

As said before rote learning isn't the same as being educated.

P.s. I don't mean that to come across as racist, that's just my paricular experience, and I would expect it to come about as cultural influences from their home country.

No kids, but if I had then they probably would be put in a Swedish language Finnish school. (There are two official languages in Finland)

Oh, and as I'm so well educated I know it's Finnish, with two n wink

^Well.. The funny thing is that pretty much all media outlets in Finland are talking about the disaster of ending up only sixth best on the PISA education rankings. The minister for education is pledging drastic measures to reverse this apocalyptic downfall that has fallen upon us.

PISA changed the judging criteria. The Nordic countries rankings fell, the top asian countries gained places. IT`S THE END OF CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT!!!

:-)

Yes - they no longer all have to do typing and home economics. Political correctness gone mad.
