Now I don't know about others but at 16 I was an idiot with no sense of responsibility and little idea of politics. Of course at the time I didn't know that, at 16 I thought I knew everything and my parents knew nothing, they got smarter as a got older somehow.

So to my point, Ms Sturgeon, our First Minister has been speaking to Dave about 16 and 17 year olds getting the vote in the next general election.

BBC said:
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will press the prime minister to lower Scotland's voting age when they hold face-to-face talks next week.

In her first meeting with David Cameron since becoming first minister, she will urge him to act swiftly to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in 2016.
Oddly though her's is the party who intend to give every child in Scotland a State Guardian until the age of 18.

So responsible enough to vote, but not responsible enough to be without a State Guardian.

Who said that every policy a party come out with strikes a chord with the voting public. My view is that 16 year olds are deemed responsible enough to start a family (in the eyes of the law) and to put their lives at risk by joining the armed forces to defend our country, but are not deemed responsible enough to put an "X" in a box on a piece of paper at a ballot box.

So you agree with votes at 16, what about a state guardian until 18, does that make sense given that a 16 year old can vote, can have kids, can defend his country ?

I don't think 16 year olds should vote.
Sturgeon wants it so she can manipulate them into the whole 'Braveheart / Freedom' nonsense and have another go at a referendum....IMO.

How do enfranchising 16 and 17 year olds and regulating driving equate to communism?

And if a 17 YO is caught smoking dope, theft or vandalism the police cannot question him unless his mum's there. By all means let them vote, but only if they take responsibility for other stuff they are not responsible for until they are 18.

My own view is that a state Guardian is unnecessary.

The Isle of Man already has voting from 16, I think the turnout for 16-18 year olds in their last general election was very very small.

It does strike me as odd that you can join the army at 16 but not vote.

If they had their way no one would be voting

That's not true. Everyone would be able to vote, but the number of options on the ballot would be very, very limited........

I think the voting age should be raised to 30. Most of the rubbish posted in here seems to be from 20 somethings! wink

Can't go operational/front line until 18 nowadays.

I think it's a dreadful idea.

16 is too young to vote.

I worry some would not know which end of the pencil to use either

Perhaps it would be better to put up the age of marriage, driving, joining the forces etc to 18 years.
