Someone's being an idiot on the internet again:

http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristol-man-sacked-jo...

A Bristol stockbroker has been sacked after facing a barrage of criticism for tweeting: "Think I just hit a cyclist. But Im late for work so had to drive off lol."

The apparent boast by Rayhan Qadar - which police are investigating - was made on his Twitter account under the name of 'Ray Pew' at 8.30am.

Despite a retraction and apology online hours later, police were alerted and outraged Twitter users blasted the graduate, who works at Hargreaves Lansdown.

A spokesman for the Bristol-based firm said: "One of our employees has failed to conduct themselves to the standards we expect of our staff.

"We find these online comments totally unacceptable.

"Upon becoming aware of this issue we have terminated this person's employment with immediate effect."

Well, they say there's nothing like a bit of gossip - and that 'news' is nothing like a bit of gossip, rather it's a lot of gossip (and virtual hot air).

Who gives a stuff?? "He tweeted..." becoming "Did you read what he tweeted?" etc... nuts

Just hope his employers are watertight on his sacking - or did they do an Ed Balls (I rather hope so redface )?? hehe

I guess it would fall under "Bringing the company into disrepute.."

Had he really hit someone and fled the scene he probably wouldn't have lost his job. His twitter name's presumably a comedy reference to rape, so sod him.

Assuming he didn't actually hit a cyclist, sacking someone for making a bad joke is appalling.
Yes, its not a funny joke, but then he wasn't employed as a comedian. His username isn't funny either.

If people are to be fired for being bellends, the dole queue is about to grow exponentially.

A lot of companies have policies on this that could possibly stretch to out of hours personal use.

If Hargreaves Lansdown had checked his Twitter account before they offered him a job, and his profile was like that then they may not have recruited him.

There's at least two lessons from this episode.

Devils advocate mode : when employed do the Company hire you for the duration of contract hours agreed or do they own you and may intervene in your life outside of the work hours.
Of course if an employee is bad mouthing the employer that is a different matter entirely.

You're right. Total madness. As others have said the employer could well be on thin ice with an immediate sacking. I truly hope so and H-L will be on my list of badly run businesses to be avoided from now on.

Given how quickly he was fired my guess is 'Ray Pew' was easily identifiable by real name and employer. Which means he's a fvcking idiot and who needs a fvcking idiot stock broker?

What proof do you have that he would have kept his job, if he really had hit a cyclist?

Does the piece of text in this mean anything to anyone else?

Also why does someone like this (ordinary bloke) have around 1300 followers??

His mate JamzLdn has 34,500 followers?

And someone in Kurupt Krew looks like a dodgy police officer I've met that's sent some questionable Tweets on their official police Twitter account too.

They can't be that far away from waving their arms and parting the waves of the Severn Estuary.

I've never heard of anyone sacked for an RTC involving a cyclist. I've heard of three drivers who walked free after claiming "the sun was in my eyes" so they killed a cyclist.

It seem Twitter can really bring the stupid out in people.
Not long ago A stupid bint from this neck of the woods really did hit a cyclist and then boasted about it on twitter after not stopping.
That cost her her job and got a fined a a load of points.

+1 (and clearly I'm not the only one). The bint who actually DID hit someone, ran off and joked about it, fair enough - I wouldn't use the custom of a company that kept her on given the choice.

He does seem to be, ahem, "learning" the art of comedy. A joke with friends is one thing but on Twitter etc you're almost certainly broadcasting that joke to someone who HAS been caused terrible hurt by the exact event you're trivialising. That does change things from "un PC" to "being a bit of an arse" IMO, at least if you're not funny enough to justify it. But still, indeed nothing worth losing a job over.

Can you imagine being the 999 operator or police officer on the end of the non emergency number that has to deal with this?

Police: Police, how can I help?

Caller: someone said something I don't like on Twitter!

Police: groan

I'd sack him for being late, dishonesty and a general lack of effort if he didn't hit the cyclist.

Just as well we don't work at the same company or we'd have no staff left.

Disgraceful he's been sacked for something so trivial.
