Is it just me that's thinking that the bombs going off these days usually have people attached. This is just going to be a package someone has left by mistake.

Our home grown nutters don't have the guts to attach themselves to their bombs. They have to be home to Mum by 6.30.

I would happily pick it up and throw it in the bin.

It will be someones sweaty gym gear.

Move on nothing to see.

What was that joke doing the rounds recently? Something along the lines of, in the old days, when you saw an unattended bag on the tube you though "I'm having that", now you get off at the next stop.

You seem to have forgotten the losers from July 2005.

If there's one thing worse than faffy, yoghurt-knitting hipster food, it's people ordering it and not even consuming it. Would never happen with a bacon buttie.

A few years ago we had a 'suspected package' incident that turned out to be a half eaten donner kebab in a polystyrene box found under the acrylonitrile tanks on plant. Being a top tier COMAH site the st properly hit the fan, there were quite a few nipsys twitching that day I can tell you

I was on another site that dug up a grenade, near a methane gas bag, no drama one of the polish lads picked it up, walked a couple of hundred meters away and tossed on the bank ready for the bomb squad to come and collect!! Nobody ever got to the bottom of how a grenade just happened to have been found discarded on the verge.....

Like most PCs at the time, I received training in identifying letters bombs and such during the PIRA and anti-Semitic attacks on innocents in the late 70s, this from a Met Bomb Squad chap. These are the ones whom we called out if we couldn't clear it. Never once did any criticism come back from them regarding not being willing to toss one in the bin. They did criticise us, and me once, for other things, but never for being too cautious. I forget the actual words, and indeed numbers, they used but their final statement was: Probably not more that one in a thousand are bombs. I mean, what are the odds that it might go off?

Their advice was good enough for me.

I'm not in the lest bit superstitious, or so I thought. I was once given a list of fourtenn suspect letters to clear on one shift. I baulked at clearing the 13th. I resented the fact that I could not bring myself to do it. So I'm probably just stitious.

We were told: 'If you are not prepared to open [or move] it yourself, you haven't cleared it.' To which one of our guys, who hadn't been paying attention, asked: 'Should we open one when we've cleared it then?' The chap answered with a look. The point was that if you think you should open it because not to do so would put the public at risk, it hasn't been cleared.
