This is genius. Our local MP. A man not renowned for wearing out the carpet in the entrance foyer of the House of Commons representing his constituents. Has just had a very public spat with Avon and Somerset Police because despite reminders his firearms and shotgun certificates have lapsed. When told he would have to wait, he went into meltdown and the coppers response was well if you gave us more money we would be able to deal with it quicker. I think he may just regret going public with this wink

I think his only vaguely valid point is the final one.

I can't see any evidence of a rant or anything to criticise here.

I fell foul of this on my first renewal, getting the papers in a couple of weeks before expiry. Why should it take so long to renew an existing certificate? Police have access to criminal records data, a few minutes should do the job. What else do they need to look at?

The only travesty in this tale is the Bridgwater Mercury's inability to spell the word licence.

Leaving aside the class/inverse snobbery issues I think he does have a point, however badly made.

4 months is an unacceptably long time. If there is genuinely a 16 week backlog in processing perhaps a more pragmatic solution should be introduced; an express service at a reasonably hefty premium. That way, everyone wins - more money into the cash strapped system, he can get his toys back and the hypothetical gamekeeper/farmer isn't left without an essential tool for months on end.

A few years back I forgot to renew my passport in the run up to a trip to the US, entirely my own fault and the trip was entirely pleasure based. Rather than making me wait and miss my trip, I was able to pay extra, get in done in a few hours and not miss out on my holidays - don't really see a difference.

I think it's more to do with the fact they don't want people to have guns, so this is really put on the back burner, who knows you might say bugger it, I wont bother, another cabinet of guns of the streets.
I had co terminus certificate for over 30 years, and always had a long wait, I was once told, if I wanted a gun, I should join the army.
TBF my local issuing office (Gwent) has got a lot better, my son applied last year, and start to finish took around 6 weeks, for co terminus.
This was unheard of in my days, Gwent was notorious for delaying, and taking an absolute age to re issue.

Perhaps they're busy processing the farmers' and gamekeepers' applications first and his - that by his own admission wasn't that important - could wait. Shame.

He seems like a decent chap.

Liddell-Grainger claimed a total of £166,109 in expenses, including for office, staffing and travelling costs, during 2007–8.[12] Under revised regulations, during 2010-11 he claimed the reduced sum of £147,004 for expenses, the sixth highest of all MPs in that year.[13] Liddell-Grainger has registered his wife as a parliamentary assistant[14] and in 2010 included both his wife and his two eldest children on his list of staff, the only MP to do so at the time.[15]

Emails[edit]
In 2006, Liddell-Grainger was disqualified from the WriteToThem league table after faking e-mails and replies to himself to improve his "responsiveness rating" on a website which helps people contact their elected representatives. Liddell-Grainger's spokesman commented that the e-mails had been sent to test the data that the website was judging him on.[16]

At the 2010 general election Liddell-Grainger refused to attend any election hustings or to take part in the BBC's election coverage.[17][18] A Facebook group was set up asking "Where's Ian Liddell-Grainger?"[17] Liddell-Grainger said that he was busy canvassing and dealing with casework.[17]

I say this as a Section 1 firearms holder. Anyone with a temprement like that he exhibited possibly isn't the sort who should be armed with anything available on a Section 1 ticket.

Why would he mention he is an MP? What possible relevance could that have?

MPS are terribly important! As our elected representatives they get paid lots of money for rubber stamping legislation from Brussels. Nice one!

He doesn't enjoy a great reputation locally. Will turn up to the opening of an envelope if the press are there. Not quite so easy to track down if something involves a bit of work

I have to agree with this statement:

“When I mentioned the fact that I was a MP it was suggested that if the Government gave the force some more money they might be able to get these things done more quickly.”

It is his party after all that have cut the police budget by 18%.

Agree with others, a self entitled nob.

The fact that he's apparently useless/unfit/scrounging isn't really relevant. He might not deserve to be re-elected, but his complaint does seem valid.

Regardless who's applying, 16 weeks is an unreasonably long time to wait and the system needs to be improved. If there aren't enough resources, charge more for the permit to reflect the costs of improving the service or offer a more expensive express service for those in a hurry.
