PPCs are relying on the gullible nature of people paying a phoney fine without even questioning whether it is legal or valid. I often refer to them as speculative invoices, but these one will be more so than any other.

I'm relishing the receipt of the first on these, and out of principle I'll be pushing it to a court hearing. Sady most of the PPC despite issuing many claims, either fail to pay the hearing fee or send a notice of discontinuance when they see my defence statements.

They will only pay out if the mark falls for the scam and pays £60.

Knowing the integrity of these type of businesses, I'm not sure they will readily disclose if the ticket was ever paid or not, so that Norris and his camera phone will just assume it wasn't paid.

I don't understand this. They're relying on the law of contract. If there aren't any signs, with contract terms, on property, how can a contract exist?

You know that, I know that, but a lot of average joes in the street think if they get an official looking letter that it needs to be paid. Especially if they get a few more letters with increasing amounts of red ink. (Or a spreadsheet from Debt Recovery Plus with £23,000 worth of outstanding parking charges... but that is another story!)

I'm pretty sure enough people will fall for the scam to make it worthwhile for the parking companies.

Ah, right. Thought they thought they'd found a new way to work within the law.

I'm in your neck of the woods. Rarely venture into S1 or 2 these days, but I had a barney with a security bod recently, who didn't like me waiting in the car, on the public highway, outside his security gate. Took photos and made phone calls. If he gets wind of this scam, it might be a wheeze to go down there again...hehe

Isn't it that you can't park on pedestrian paths unless there is a sign saying you are allowed to? So no signs, no parking.

Reviews say the media story is misleading "you can only use this if you manage/lease a carpark"

What gives the right of policing that to a PPC?

Sheffield City Council states the opposite.

What about causing an obstruction? Surely if you take up the entire payment, that's an obstruction?

Absolutely none, however that won't stop them attempting to extort money out of people. VCS, another Sheffield company, are quite good at making up laws and contract terms around airports, especially claiming that when you stop to read a sign that says "No stopping" in very small print, it gives them the right to extort £100 out of you.

I try not to go in there much either, but I reckon I drive past your location twice a day given that I live up near Fulwood, and work in Chesterfield.

The commute is done on electric, rather than V8, so don't listen out for me...

You do indeed, but I'm on the road a lot, so I'll chuck you a skateboard if when I spot you with a flat battery...smile
