Discussion
Tennis champion Boris Becker has been declared bankrupt.
Didn't he have a 959 at some point?

Probably hidden it where it won't be affected by his bankruptcy. How do these rich people manage to go bankrupt yet still keep the massive house etc.? Razor Ruddock was on can't pay we'll take it away a few years ago, bankrupt yet living in an Essex McMansion and two brand new cars on the drive.I assume Boris has declared bankruptcy to make a huge debt go away yet still manages to keep the same lifestyle. I don't think he will be being housed by the council any time soon.

I met him at a bar called Schumann's I Munich in 2000 (I think); I was well trolleyed. I bought him a couple of drinks, he bought me a couple back. I had no idea who he was (obviously I knew who he was, just didn't recognise him until all my mates were asking afterwards), but he seemed a nice chap.

Despite being pretty au-fait with finance, I can't really work out how rich celebrities and business people seem to go bankrupt and yet be seen out in very expensive clothes, getting out of expensive cars, and going home to expensive houses.
I remember seeing some z-lister on the news who was apparently bankrupt and owing £5m. Technically me, with bugger all but no debt, is £5m better off than them, yet they're the one who continues to enjoy a massive house in Cheshire and a new Range Rover!Sixpackpert said:

I was royally stiffed by a member of my extended family who went bankrupt after ai lent him a large amount of money, and although he was left with a fair amount more than I would have expected, he still ended up in a two bedroom flat, rented, and a ten year-old c-class with a six figure mileage.
Is it done by blowing money beforehand on lovely gifts for the spouse?
Generally you can keep a car worth under £1500 if you can prove getting to work would be cheaper running the car than using alternative forms of transportation. You can pay rent on a house as long as the house/flat is reasonable to your needs (having children is a good argument for a 2nd bedroom) Getting rid of money in bank accounts pre Bankruptcy (normally up to 2years prior to the bankruptcy) is hard as the insolvency service will be scrutinising these accounts exactly for this. They have the power to reverse transactions. Cash is a different matter, if the guy who stiffed you had £100k stashed somewhere, it would be down to the IS to find it. Keep an eye on him, if you feel within the 12 month period of his BR he is living a life style you feel hasn't been declared to the IS, you could have a chat with them. May not get you any of your money back, but could make their life that bit more difficult, and if he has been naughty the terms of his BR could be extended beyond the normal 12 months. As said above however having a 2 bed flat and old C Class is pretty normal.
Ps the above is for England only, not Scotland/Ireland
