I saw this on a U.S. forum over the weekend, and as would be expected, the Yanks were forming a line to severely castigate that nice Mr. Trudeau.
I think that I can understand that, but I am notorious for reading at the speed of light, and in doing so, missing salient points, so what does everyone think?
Canada to apologize and give $10,500,000 to Muslim who murdered U.S. soldier

He pleaded guilty to killing an American soldier. This outrageous shakedown epitomizes the weakness, flaccidity and wrongheadedness of the West’s response to the global jihad.
“Omar Khadr to receive apology and $10.5M compensation package from Canada: official,” by Rob Gillies, Associated Press, July 4, 2017 (thanks to Lookmann):
The Canadian government is going to apologize and give millions to a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who pleaded guilty to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15, with Canada’s Supreme Court later ruling that officials had interrogated him under “oppressive circumstances.”
An official familiar with the deal said Tuesday that Omar Khadr will receive $10.5 million. The official was not authorized to discuss the deal publicly before the announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity. The government and Khadr’s lawyers negotiated the deal last month.
The Canadian-born Khadr was 15 when he was captured by U.S. troops following a firefight at a suspected al-Qaida compound in Afghanistan that resulted in the death of an American special forces medic, U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Christopher Speer. Khadr, who was suspected of throwing the grenade that killed Speer, was taken to Guantanamo and ultimately charged with war crimes by a military commission.

I think
1) this belongs in NPE
2) While its easy to say this kid is guilty and should be locked up/shot/drawn and quartered, we in the civilised world operate under the rules that torture is not allowed, and we know that in general, it can easily produce false testimony. As much as i would like to see ISIS and Al-qaeda wiped off the face of the earth, i have to commend the canadians on not going along with the yanks and their gitmo practices.
3) its hard to put a monetary value on human suffering, but 10M seems a bit much no? It basically means that if this kid has any kind of common sense, he will never have to work a day in his life. And given what the yanks did to him in gitmo, i wouldnt be surprised to see most/all of that money flowing directly into ISIS/AQ coffers...

Raised by nutters who bred him to be a Jihadi almost from birth and KNEW martyrdom was the highest achievement he could aspire to because it was the only truth he was ever told.
Shot by the SF Solders he was fighting at 15 - does that make him any better or worse than them? Neither side was invited into Afghanistan.
Captured and sent to Guantanamo to be tortured for information, would you trust a confession from a) a child in agonising pain held in Gitmo b) an ISIS follower, ISIS who of course will take responsibility for a rainy day if they could.
No he's not a saint, he's probably not a very nice person and he'd probably done some horrible things - but given his background is it any wonder?
I'm not sure he's due compensation, but the way he's being portrayed by Fox News et al isn't very balanced.

We did the same. Those who returned from Guantanamo attempted to sue the British government for their agents involvement in rendition and torture. The government do not defend such cases because it would mean exposing MI5/MI6 agents so many of the former British Guantanamo detainees received millions in payouts.
We even gave some non Brits money. For example, Binyam Mohamed was born in Ethiopia, and emigrated to Canada in 1995, where he sought political asylum and lived there for a number of years before flying to Britain where he was a failed asylum seeker - he then traveled to Afghanistan in 2001 (as you do) and was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and handed over to the Americans. When he was released we not only took him back - he wasn't a British citizen - but we then had to give him a million quid after flying him here on a private jet.

To quote myself from the Trudeau thread...

Fought for al-Qaeda, knew Osama bin Laden personally, convicted in the US of murdering a US medic and Trudeau pays him $10m for his troubles.
(sound familiar to anyone?)
Michelle Rempel: Why would Trudeau pay Khadr $10-million before having a court weigh in?
And on what day did the illustrious Prime Minister of Canada decide to announce this settlement deal?
On July 4th of course.
Slapping Trump in the face with a wet kipper is one thing, slapping the entire country is quite another,
It's time to go home to mommy Justin.
That's right, it's time to let the adults run things again.
This really is not sitting well with the average Canadian either.(sound familiar to anyone?)

I suppose the Canadian government is going to award 10.5 million to the dead American soldiers family as well?
It's not over 'til the fat lady singsWidow of medic could go after Omar Khadr's $10.5M settlement: legal advisor

Meanwhile, Speer’s wife and Morris [Layne Morris injured by Khadr in the same incident] sued Khadr for damages and won a default $134 million in 2015 in a Utah court. The settlement was never enforced, which would have required legal action in Canadian court.
