Of course. Why am I not surprised! They always report record profits and no wonder as they keep pushing their prices up annually. Looks like the Viggyp household will just put the heat on for the daily showers and wrap up of an evening.

Edited as noticed that it is about electricity only, not gas............but still.......12.5%!!

12.5% furious
At what point do government actually do something about this? I'm not in fuel poverty, but soon will be at this rate. Perhaps public ownership of some of the utilities was not such a bad idea after all?

Quasi-Marxist state interventionist Ed Milliband Theresa May promised me she'd cap energy prices in her election manifesto. Now I feel cheated.

I thought I heard on 'Today' that this was only a catch-up and they (BG) were the last to do it. Maybe I mis-heard?

You can't say that around here, you will be labelled a mental communist by all the small staters who don't give two shiny sts about anybody other than themselves.

They didn't put up their electricity prices before when all the other companies did, so no surprise.

You're paying for all the pointless windmills and other crap, get over to the future of generation thread and ask poster Paddy for your money back.

Yes but, you'll get those lovely smart meters which will save you at least 120%...

12% is a pisstake of an increment, especially when they are usually top of the pile price wise already.

Thankfully I don't have to deal with them and have fixed my prices until 2020.

Have you seen how much he's paying his ex in child maintenance? I'm half tempted to jump on that bandwagon, we've got an 'energy college' here now that does courses in all of this! hehe

It looks like the Conservatives have abandoned the energy price cap. Under Labour every household and business will have access to affordable, publicly owned energy.

Yeah right, I'm sure those firms looking to build new Nuclear plants or install renewables, etc will be falling over themselves to build stuff that might then be nationalised.

Our house is electric only. Scottish Power put ours up by 66.6% when our deal ended in April - shopped around for a better deal but there was nothing else so just stayed with them to avoid the hassle of changing ... hope they don't follow British Gas with a further double digit rise!

Hate to tell you this guys but the costs of electricity in the UK is cheap compared to Germany for instance. I knows this is for 2014 but should give some idea, i.e 30% or so cheaper in the UK:

Because of taxes, base price is lower than the UKs

UKs base (pre taxes) cost is one of the highest

Thats true, BG are only implementing the price rises already initiated by the other major players. The main problem in our energy market (particularly concerning electricity) is government energy policy, or rather the lack of a common sense, coherent strategy. All this tinkering and general fkaboutery with windmills and other nonsense, is costing us heavily, ask the Danes about that one.

To be fair I tend to lie if we miss Dan Dan and put a lot of extra units on for summer by ringing through extra ones when the estimated bill comes.
