According to this article in the Telegraph only 16% of the over 40's have ever tried an avocado??!?
At this point, mods, I'll say please don't move this thread to Food & Drink, because it's not really about food & drink!
Whether this is actually accurate or not, there presumably has to be at least something in it for them to get to that sort of figure, which gets me wondering just what sort of a bubble world I actually live in?
Given that avocado and prawns was a staple starter to match the Black Forest gateau at many a 70s dinner party, how on earth can only 16% of people over 40 tried one?
What next? A survey finding that only 35% of only children have access to electricity? 42% of Northerners have never worn socks?
Does anyone else see things like this and start to wonder if they're living in a parallel universe?

There is an area in Glasgow called Possilpark.
Other than potatoes, usually in chipped form, the males do not eat fruit and veg.
My father in law was born and bred there. A perfectly normal hardworking and when he was alive (died mid 70's) healthy man and actually a good goalkeeper in his day. Other than potatoes he did not eat fruit and veg.
There is a high street there which has no fruit and veg shop. No demand for it.
I think there may be other areas of the city where only chipped potatoes form the fruit and veg intake.
I am sure many of them would know what an avocado was, but would never actually eat one.

Might be down to the wording - I've eaten lots of avocado, but never "an avocado". I do have a few months left before hitting 40 though, so maybe one for the bucket list.
Hmmm...I was thinking I'd had one today, the grandkids (I am over 40) were here for lunch. Just checked and apparently it was a kiwi.
Maybe that's the issue with the survey - fruit identification by older people.

45 and I just dont eat any veg at all bar spuds.
Never have never will tbh, Also don't eat the likes of rice, pasta, spice's, cheese, etc etc.
I am a plain eater of food so its spuds/chips with a plain meat dish, Ususally rump steak but lamb, chicken or beef does just as well.
Pretty much the same, big slab of cow will do me.Never have never will tbh, Also don't eat the likes of rice, pasta, spice's, cheese, etc etc.

There was something similar on a Jamie Oliver thing with a load of primary school kids unable to identify common vegetables. Then he did the same thing in Italy, completely different result.drainbrain said:

I'm stunned. I've eaten avocado since the 70s. Nowadays I have it every week.
If I eat out I generally have something I don't normally eat at home. No point in paying someone to cook and serve roast chicken.
The concept of foreign food is, well, foreign to me and, I assume, a lot of people my age. If it's on the shelves it's not foreign. I'll eat anything from anywhere once. If I don't enjoy it, it stays at once. I've got some friends around my age and we have one-another round for meals and there's normally something I haven't tried.
I eat a lot of vegetables as well, but butternut squash leaves me cold. It's not that I don't enjoy it but there are a number of better tasting veg out there.
If they put this questionnaire to Celtic supporters perhaps it would explain the results.
I was born right after the war and I remember the first banana I tasted. One of my uncles liberated half a dozen from the docks and my brother and I were given half each to enjoy. I was about 5. My parents and some aunts watched us eat it. I hated it, but in those days you had to eat what you were given and also make out your were thankful.
I take the point about Italy and knowledge of vegetables. I went to the Amalfi coast for 10 days last year and ate a different pasta every evening. There was a different selection of veg as well.
I like Italy.

My father in law would only eat rice in rice pudding. Never touched pasta or any of that foreign muck. But even he ate a variety of veg. And I thought he was a boring sod!
