While the worlds attention has been directed toward the Korean peninsula over the past few weeks, on the other side of China trouble has been brewing.

India has moved troops over the Chinese border into Doklam, a region of Tibet, and has refused to leave.

China has started moving thousands of items of military equipment into the region and appears to be preparing to evict the Indians.

China is playing these silly territorial games to test its foes, like India, US, etc.

China walked all over the UK and Portugal to defeat and win back Hong Kong and Macau and this has emboldened it to win more ground around its borders.

In this particular instance, China is arguably the innocent party as the border in this region is settled and until now, undisputed.

No they didn't

HK was leased from China ... the lease ran out and it went back to China

I'd hardly call that walking all over the UK

Hong Kong island and Kowloon were not leased. They had been permanently ceded. The New Territories were leased. When the British raised the possibility of continuance of British sovereignty from the mid seventies it was made very clear by Deng to Thatcher that the only resolution acceptable to the PRC was the full transfer of sovereignty back to China.
" Deng told her bluntly that China could easily take Hong Kong by force, stating that "I could walk in and take the whole lot this afternoon", to which she replied that "there is nothing I could do to stop you, but the eyes of the world would now know what China is like"

The UK intended to retain administrative control if not sovereignty. China said no. Yipper was largely correct in his summary.

That's a nice diplomatic way of putting it wink

Indeed. The Brits took HK from China with the threat of military force. China effectively did the same to get it back. On the topic of the disputes between India and China - seems a bit pointless willy-waving from
both sides though India doesn't historically have good form at high altitude warfare so look a bit sillier.

This has been slowly building up over the last few weeks. Hopefully nothing will happen.

The fighting has started - thankfully it's all pretty low tech so far and they haven't gone past the fists and stones/rocks stage. smile

Yes, it was the punishment we handed out to them after they had the temerity to try and stop us from turning their population into opium addicted zombie junkies.

In 1997, I'm not convinced an agreement made effectively at gunpoint would have much standing in international law.

The didn't walk all over us, they had us over a barrel and both sides knew it.

What a surreal situation between China and India - two nuclear powers with massive militaries yet every so often, in between reasonably cordial relations, a fist, stick and rock fight will take place.

Last year....

And apparently it’s just kicked off again...

This will continue to happen, China is increasing its assertiveness globally as can be seen with the more overt aggression towards Taiwan recently and of course with these regular bust-ups with India.
In a conventional warfare I would say China beats India but neither really need or want a full scale war and with nuclear weapons it could get v messy if things spiral out of control.
I expect India will be trying to strengthen their alignment with the US politically Vs the China-Russia partnership. At a basic level it's like right you get your crew, I will get mine then we take jabs at each other.
Interesting that the US are moving some hardware into the region..any misunderstandings or trigger-happy types and it could escalate v quickly.
