I've lost track of what we're supposed to be blaming this guy for. It rained yesterday, was he involved in some kind of conspiracy to cause me to get wet?

Soros, a man who puts his money where his mouth is, makes a good hate figure for the far right -

In Hungary, populist demagogue Orban is attacking the university that Soros established in Budapest -

The campaign against him in Hungary had some pretty blatant and nasty anti-Semitic undertones. We then had a bizarre situation where Israel went on to defend Hungary's anti-Semitic portrayal of Soros in those posters that the government in Hungary put up.

They tend to do this in their old age, with the money they know they can't spend before they are dead.

Worrying about their 'legacy'.

Or maybe trying to make a difference? Soros has been an active philanthropist for years.

Doesn't the relatively small amounts given away by these types result in a lot of soft power and intangible benefits?

Maybe I am too cynical!

Who are "they"? How many of 'them' do you personally know to state "they" are "worrying about their 'legacy'"?

Note the article says since 1979. Not bad having an "old age" that has lasted 38 years so far!

Relative to their worlds not mine smile When you own swathes of assets, playthings and so on, that additional Billion isn't going to do much.

His charity says it spends 500 Million a year.

This guy has donated many billions to charity, and yet you carp. If all is relative, have you given a bigger proportion of your assets to charity than Soros has?

Soros is said to have had 23 billion, now down to 5 billion after the latest donation. He has given away 32 billion in total. What a fking chiselling skinflint, eh?

He hasn't given away to existing charities though. He has put it into his own fund and with that comes power in itself.

For example a quick read up on him now reveals he is both big on increasing democracy throughout the world, whilst making good money from the voting machines being sold to do this (financial links with Smartmatic) laugh

Think I should bow out now though, as my knowledge is limited to my cynical instincts from working in this area.

OK, he's given away 32 billion and kept 5 billion. Are you going to tell us your figures? Can you beat 86%?

How many universities have you founded?

He has 'given' as in just moved into another account whilst maintaining full control, 18 billion whilst having 1 foot in the grave.

Previous to that he gave away much smaller amounts, not distributed as your comment implies.

Anyway, as said, I am bowing out.

Give him a knighthood!

The foundation is not "his" fund. It's distinct from his business activities. If you really think that Soros supports democracy just so that he can sell voting machines, your cynicism is deep even by the lamentable standards of NPE.

It is his fund, it is a fund he controls, and that "funds" project he wants it to fund.

Fund does not just relate to a Hedge Fund...

Anyway leave you to it, Im sure you are right and he is not a controversial figure.

A series of institutions across the world, with various boards running them, and Soros as overall chair. What's wrong with a wealthy person setting up his own charitable organisation? Does it only count if he gives money to Oxfam?

How are you doing with your "more than 86%" asset giveaway?
